Dear
Friends,
The U.P.
College of Home Economics holds the distinction of being
the first in the country to offer the then BS Hotel and
Restaurant Administration program. This coming 2005 will
mark the 35th year of our academic leadership in the
field of hospitality. [ more

The Department of
Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management traces
its roots to the B.S. in Home Economics
(BSHE) program, which was instituted in 1922. In 1939, Foods
and Nutrition was introduced as a major in the BSHE program.
Subsequent revisions of this major, especially in 1955, when
core courses related to food service in institutions were
included, paved the way for the introduction of Food
Service Administration (FSA), as another major of the
BSHE program in 1969. The BSHE (FSA major) was expanded and
became B.S. in Hotel and Restaurant
Administration (BSHRA). This new program took effect
on April 1, 1970, as a joint responsibility of the College of Business
Administration (CBA) and the College of Home
Economics (CHE), with the latter given the task
of administering it.
