The National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development is an extension arm of the University of the Philippines whose goal is to raise the level of teaching and learning of science and mathematics in the Philippine educational system. It aims to be a major source of quality information and services for stakeholders in science and mathematics education. For more than four decades, UP NISMED has engaged in research, curriculum development, teacher training in science and mathematics education, and extension work.

With the establishment of the Science Teacher Training Center, a Japanese Grant Aid in 1989, the Institute has acquired for its programs, state-of-the-art facilities designed for research, curriculum development, and training. A library, with a collection of over 18,000 volumes of print and nonprint materials, eight fully-equipped teaching laboratories, microteaching room, astronomical observatory, video studio and control room, a workshop for prototype development, printing and photographic equipment, and a 48-room hostel comprise the facilities that provide the support services for the Institute’s operations.

In its programs and projects, UP NISMED strives for relevance, responsiveness, innovation and interdisciplinary and multimedia approaches. It also pursues globalization by pursuing programs in research, curriculum development, and teacher training in line with emerging global trends and networking with similar institutions in other countries.

Recently, UP NISMED was conferred the Gawad LIDER for Exemplary Leadership-Institutional Category by the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) in recognition of its consistent demonstration of leadership qualities in “the pursuit of an idea and a performance that generated nationwide impact on public interest in the field of science education.”
