Course Objectives
At the end of the course, the participants will be able to:
• acquire a functional understanding of industrial automation and instrumentation in general, and control engineering in particular;
• understand and design ladder logic diagrams, the widely-used programming language of PLCs;
• use application software for PLC programming, downloading, uploading, monitoring and documentation, be it online or offline through PCs;
•
execute and run programmable controller programs with actual loads; and
• identify and isolate common problems encountered in the control systems of automated facilities;

Course Content
The course will be completed for a total of 30 hours and will cover
the following topics.
• Introduction to electrical control systems (relays, timers, counters, basic applications, boolean algebra, logic circuit functions, circuit exercises)
• Electrical ladder design
• Introduction to PLCs
• Programming and running SIEMENS PLCs
• Programming and running ALLEN-BRADLEY PLCs
• Programming and running OMRON PLCs
• Introduction to application software: offline / online programming
All
the above topics have corresponding laboratory sessions.

Target Participants
The participants should preferably be a holder of a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Industrial or Chemical Engineering. The course is also open to instructors of technical schools and industrial technicians.

The participants are expected to attend all sessions and complete laboratory assignments.

Training Methodology
The lecture-discussion method will be used and sufficiently supplemented by laboratory and simulation work, which will constitute the hands-on portion of the program. The resource person and a laboratory technician will supervise individual and group exercises closely.

VENUE
Sessions will be conducted at the Low Cost Automation (LCA) Room of UPISSI.
