Subject: Teaching Associates (TA)/ Teaching Fellows (TF)

This year, I have allocated P3,750,000 for TAs/TFs, 
 the same budget we have had since 1996. Because of 
 the increase in the salary scale in 1997, 2000 and 
 2001, this budget is expectedly lacking. In the past 
 years, we were able to fund the deficit by dipping 
 into our PS savings.

I am sure you all realize how really tight our budget 
 is this year. So I have asked the Budget Office to 
 compute how many slots we can really support with the 
 P3,750,000 (less 5% reserve) and they came up with 
 these: 19 slots, with 15 slots TA and 4 slots TF. 
 Considering that we have at present 32 filled slots 
 for TA and 3 slots for TF, there is a need to review 
 and prioritize our appointments of TA/TF, hoping that 
 after a reasonable time we will hit the ideal 19 slots. 
 As a first step, we will not fill up the 31 vacant 
 slots this June. In the meantime, we will study the 
 viability of the TA/TF program.

Please coordinate with Vice Chancellor Amelia Guevara 
 in this regard. Thank you for your usual cooperation.
