Course Description: A study of music from representative regions of the world from the perspectives of music as a sonic object, as a social act and as thought and cognition.

I. Introduction: The Diversity of Musical Languages – Music is not a universal language but a universal phenomenon (3 hrs.)
II. Three musical streams – the Philippine indigenous, folk and urban music
cultures (3 hrs.)
III. Bossed gong cultures: the Indonesian Javanese and Balinese gamelan (3 hrs.)
IV. Loud and soft music: the pi phat and mohori of Thailand and Cambodia (3 hrs.)
V. Music of the elite: the Chinese ya-yueh, the Japanese gagaku and the
Korean aak (3 hrs.)
VI. Music of the masses: the Beijing opera, Japanese kabuki, and enka, the
Korean p’ansori, sinawi and sanjo (3 hrs.)
VII. Long songs and short songs: the Mongolian urtin duu and bogin duu (3 hrs.)
