Proposed Course Syllabus

1.  Objectives:

            This course will enable students to

·        understand the elements and principles of art;

·        discover how art and life complement each other;

·        make informed judgment about art; and,

• experience the creative process.

2.  Course Outline (reduce  total number of weeks to 16 weeks)

Overview of art and its relevance to our world today                            

Unit I.  Pigments and Pixels                                                               3 ½ weeks

• Forms of art
• Elements of art
• Principles of art

Unit Examination

Unit II.             The Artist’s Way                                                                   4 weeks

• The artist and his/her materials and techniques

• The artist and his/her themes
• The artist and his/her audience

Unit III.            Studio Time                                                                            4 weeks

       Making art.

Unit IV.            Living with Art                                                                       3 ½ weeks

• Enjoying art
• Collecting art
• Conserving art

3.  Course Requirements

Students will be required to do the following:

• Write short papers on selected topics on the forms, elements, principles, themes, functions and methods of production of art
• Do hands-on projects that integrate the basic elements and principles in art making
• Visit galleries, museums, artists’ studios and other cultural institutions.
