The Revitalized G.E. Program framework (click to open R.G.E.P. Framework) and G.E. program (click to open From G.E. to R.G.E.P.) was approved by the 76th University Council meeting of U.P.Diliman on December 12, 2001 and the 1157th Board of Regents meeting on December 19, 2001 for implementation 1st semester AY2002-2003. The following describes the details of R.G.E.P.:
1. R.G.E.P. framework - lays down the requirements of the program (objectives, modes of inquiry and competencies) and defines the character of the G.E. courses.
- The R.G.E.P. ensures that the domains of knowledge contain a healthy mix of disciplines.
- The R.G.E.P. framework requires that students take 15 units in each of the 3 domains of knowledge, 6 units of which must be in Philippine Studies, to be taken from any of the domains.
- Every G.E. course, existing or to be instituted, must satisfy at least three of the four objectives, apply at least one mode of inquiry and develop both competencies listed.
- A G.E. course must not have a prerequisite, except if taken as a cluster.
- Units that offer G.E. courses must take into account the attributes of the ideal G.E. faculty.
2. The R.G.E.P. describes the objectives, approach, content and distribution of courses and the number of units.
- Generally, the R.G.E.P. has the following objectives:
- To broaden the student's intellectual and cultural horizons;
- To foster a commitment to nationalism balanced by a sense of internationalism;
- To cultivate a capacity for independent, critical and creative thinking;
- To infuse a passion for learning with a high sense of moral and intellectual integrity.
- Specifically, the program aims to enable the student:
- To acquire basic skills and competencies in mathematics, reasoning and communication;
- To develop an awareness, understanding and appreciation of the various disciplines of the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities and philosophy; and,
- To develop the ability to integrate and/or adapt the knowledge and skills acquired from the various disciplines.
From a fully prescriptive, structured approach, with fixed common content, the R.G.E.P. adopts a semi-structured approach with common goals and learner-customized content, provided:
- Students select courses within the G.E. framework;
- Students who perform below a certain cut-off in UPCAT Math and English proficiency and comprehension sub-tests take Summer Bridge Program before enrolling as freshmen; and
- Prerequisites of major courses are respected.
Subject to the above conditions and following the R.G.E.P. framework, courses in each domain will consist of:
- Present G.E. courses
- Existing non-G.E. courses with a liberal education thrust and without prerequisites that the University Council qualifies as G.E.; and
- New courses that the University Council qualifies as G.E.
G.E. courses for R.G.E.P. will be distributed as follows:
| | Arts and Humanities | 15 units |
| | Social Sciences and Philosophy | 15 units |
| | Math, Science and Technology | 15 units |
| | Total Units | --------- 45 units |
