Description

The development of more advanced language skills in critical thinking and effective reading and writing.

You can try as hard as you can, but still, you cannot avoid doing research and writing research papers in college. No worry. There is a course that prepares and trains you for these kinds of task. Comm 2 will teach you the rigors of research from choosing a topic to going to the library and locating information to taking down notes to making an outline to drafting your research to, well, the actual writing of your research. More than these, however, Comm 2 will also teach you the principles that are essential in writing and their application in your OWN writing such as the various styles of academic discourse, the logical connections between your statements, and the assumptions and implications of your claims. With Comm 2, you're all set for the writing of various papers in your other courses, and yes, your undergrad thesis.

Description

Speaking and Listening skills and their applications in various communication situations.

The course presents theories of nature and process of speech communication; the levels of communication; the use of language, voice and nonverbal symbols for dyadic, group communication and public speaking. The practical approach to this revitalized course of Communication 3 is designed to allow students to apply the theories to real-life or simulated communication situations. It is guaranteed to enhance interpersonal communication skills which cuts across learning other academic disciplines.

Creative Writing For Beginners (3 Units)

Description

A workshop exploring the potentials of creative writing as expression, as discipline, and as a way of thinking about the society in which we live.

If you've always suspected that you're a writer trapped in a student's body, a budding Shakespeare, or the next Nick Joaquin, this course may be for you. CW 10 will explore the craft of writing in the various literary genres through extensive readings and writing exercises in the various literary forms. The course will be conducted as a workshop, which means that all the work you produce will be critiqued by your classmates and you get a chance to critique their work as well. While this mutual "tearing apart" all happens under the teacher's gentle guidance, this course is not for the faint-hearted but for those genuinely interested in discovering their literary talents.

Description

Europes's contribution to world cultures, civilizations and languages

Europe- one of the few places in the world where the magic of the old and the allure of the new coexist. The glittering lights of Paris, the noisy Oktoberfest, the elegant Venetian gondolas, the running bulls in Pamplona- these are just but some of the sounds and images that Europe has to offer. Its diverse cultures and languages have fused together to form one beautiful symphony of sights, sounds, and ideas. Discover this beauty in EL 50- where Europe becomes more than just a place to visit, where Europe becomes an experience. The course explores the relationship between cultural concepts and their representations in the European languages as viewed from a historical perspective. By surfing the web and reading printed matter, the course intends to help students identify emerging cultural trends and observe how language documents these developments.

Description

The writing and critical reading of forms of academic discourse essential to university work

Documented essays, research papers, performance reviews, scientific reports, position papers, concept papers… the list goes on, and college life will demand at least one each of these academic papers in the course of your stay in the university. You can also expect to read, comprehend, and evaluate lengthy scientific articles, complex political analyses, abstract philosophical treatises. Don't fret - English 10 will help you get through. This course introduces you to and prepares you for the different forms of readings and writings you are bound to encounter in college. (However, it also assumes that your English proficiency level is at par with standard academic discourse.) A semester's work in English 10 equips you with the communication skills you will need to survive, even thrive, in the university.

Description

The study of various literary genres as a dynamic interaction between the individual and social and cultural forces

Literature is one way that helps us make sense of our world. It is both an artistic form and a social product. English 11 explores literature as works of art, taking into consideration the aesthetics of various literary genres. More than analyzing the intricacies of its formal elements (i.e., plot, theme, character, etc.), the course also helps you understand how and why various literary forms were produced in a range of cultures and histories in both the Philippines and the world. What role does society play in the production of literature? What role does literature play in the production of society? These are only some of the intriguing questions the course will ask and, hopefully through a range of exciting readings, begin to answer.

Description

The study of representative/landmark texts from the literatures of the world

The books that changed the world! Or at the very least, the books that influenced many people who influenced the world. Here's your chance to finally read all those books people always talk about (specially when they want to appear erudite) and participate in the discussion yourself. Learn about the heroes of the Trojan War from Homer, the finer points of Heaven and Hell from Dante, Don Quixote's impossible dream as recounted by Cervantes, feudal love from Tale of Genji, of spiritual choices in the Bhagavad-Gita, of colonial struggle in Indonesia in This Earth of Mankind the epic struggles of … maybe even why Salman Rushdie is in hiding.

Description

Principles and uses of writing in English in the various disciplines/professions

A resumé or a curriculum vitae? An executive summary or an abstract? A technical report, a case study, a legal brief? Each profession has its own unique style and writing requirements. English 30 will expose you to a variety of writing from different professional fields as it hones your writing skills in line with the specific demands of your future profession. Think of this as a writing course that caters to the writing you will be doing for the rest of your life. It makes sense then to take this course only when you are sure of your professional field. Course Description

Art and art making the Filipino way.

This course offers the student an informed understanding of the richness, diversity, relatedness and uniqueness of the different arts in the Philippines, their sources, themes and functions, and their significance in contemporary life.

 The course will enable the students to learn the different materials and methods used in making earthenware, textile, adornments, furniture, sculpture, painting,  installation, performance art and  the new media.

By the actual application of these methods on hands-on projects, the student’s understanding is broadened by a more intimate experience of the creative process, enhanced by the tapping of his/her creative potential and in effect refining the sensibilities for a deeper appreciation of the arts in the Philippines.

Art Pleasures (3 units)

Course Description

The fine art of enjoying art.

Looking at an artwork, a student often a student often finds himself/herself in a narrow position of getting or not getting its point.  This course widens that perspective by adding to themes and meanings a fundamental understanding of the elements and principles of the visual arts and the range of forms in which they are manifested.
 

Covering landmark works which will include Philippine examples  of the pictorial, the sculptural and everything in between and beyond, the course will enable the student to be  aware of the multifarious expressions of various artists,  the many standards and approaches in the appreciation of artworks, the different thinkings about art,  and the role of art in everyday life. 


The course will also give the student the opportunity to experience the creative process more intimately through actual art-making. In this way, theoretical understanding is complemented by experience of the dynamics between artist and his/her materials and techniques, themes, and audience,  making the appreciation  of art fuller and more pleasurable.

A study of various literary genres as the imaginative expression of the individual writer's experience and the society's values and ideals.

Titled Literature, Society, and the Individual, Hum 1 explores the intricate relationships between the literary work, the creative expression of one writer's experience, and the values and ideals of the society in which the work was produced. In Hum 1, you will focus on the four literary types - poetry, short story, novel, and drama - and the various elements and devices that define each one. You will read on themes such as birth, struggle, love, suffering, truth, justice, death, life cycles we experience as individuals and as a society. You will also be exposed to various ways of reading literary texts, allowing you to better appreciate the power of imagination, the beauty of the written word, and the profundity of human experience. Description

A study of music from representative regions of the world from the perspectives of music as a sonic object, as a social act and a thought and cognition

The course is an excursion through all these worlds of music. In a semester, various musical idioms and traditions of the world will be visited. Each stop will have a particular focus (e.g. religion, rituals, social processes, the elite, the masses, etc.). By studying music in the context of human life, the course aims to contribute to a better understanding of our humanity. The course adopts a multi-faceted approach to learning that includes ample audio-video examples and hands on experience with various instruments from all over the world.

Course Description

A window to the world of the theatre, its humanizing role in society and its relationship to the other arts.

An introduction to the world of the theatre by viewing productions and engaging in discussions of theatre traditions. Students will approximate the theatre experience through participation in scene studies. Included are lectures and reports on the elements of the theatre and their relationship to the other arts and allied arts of radio, drama, cinema and television.

Course Description

An introductory survey to Philippine Theatre from rituals to contemporary forms.

An introduction to the study of the Philippine theatre forms from the indigenous period until the contemporary period through discussions and viewing of video recordings of different theatre forms.

Course Description

An introduction to the art and skill of acting for the theatre.

Fundamentals of the craft of acting in lecture/workshop style. Students perform improvisations and scene studies of works by multi-awarded Filipino playwrights and world theatre masterpieces.
