Course Description       :  Basic Chemistry concepts relevant to everyday life

Course Objectives:

·        To enable students to integrate basic chemistry  concepts with their experiences, and relate chemistry with observable facts; and

·        To move the students into applying the basic chemistry concepts learned.

 

I.  WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH MATTER?           (3 hrs.)

·        Introduction to Chemistry

·        Types of matter

·        Properties of matter

·        Changes of matter

·        Demonstration and Application - eg. bubble bomb, water and nitrogen cycles

 

II.  STATES OF MATTER:  PatiGASan          (4.5 hrs.)

·        Gas, liquids and solids:  structure and properties

·        Phase transformation

·        Kinetic Molecular Theory; Gas Laws

·        Thermodynamics

·        Demonstration and Application - eg. crystal creations, balloon blow-up, glitter globe, colloids, solutions

·

III.               ATOMIC FASHION, PERIODIC TRENDS  (4.5 hrs.)

·        The Atom and subatomic particles

·        Energy levels and electronic distribution

·        Trends in the periodic table

·        Demonstration and Application - eg. flame test, magnetism, bubbularium, colors

V.  CHEMICAL REACTIONS: ELECTRONIC TAKE-OVERS AND MERGERS   (6 hrs.)

·        Chemical accounting:  conservation of electrons; conservation of mass; stoichiometry

·        Redox reactions - combustion

·        Acids and bases - neutralization

·        Organic reactions, including biochemical systems

·        Catalysis

·        Demonstration and Application - eg. qualitative tests, bubbling, water chemistry
