Dulaang UP (DUP) opens its 33rd theatre season with Hinabing Pakpak ng Ating mga Anak, a new theater piece on abused, molested and forgotten Filipino children.
Devised and directed by Anton Juan Jr., the play marks Juan’s return to the Philippine theater scene after his long stint at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA.
The play is Juan’s tribute to his colleague, the late Rene Villanueva, a staunch advocate of Philippine Children’s literature. Poignantly taking off from the symbolic elements in Villanueva’s texts, Juan returns with this new, tender but searing elegy that underscores the social conditions of children from document and memory.
Voices of dead and abused children are resurrected in this new theater piece, which is also DUP’s celebration of the centenary of the University of the Philippines.
Juan’s artistic team include the following: Dexter Santos (choreography), Leo Abaya (production design), John Ilao Batalla (lights design), Jethro Joaquin (sound design), Winter David (video and graphics), and Paul Mondoc (photography). In the cast are Earl Ignacio, Joel Saracho, Olive Nieto, Ronnie Martinez, Mary Jane Alejo, Rico Del Rosario, Via Antonio, Katte Sabate, Chic San Agustin, Mara Marasigan and JC Santos.
Hinabing Pakpak opens on July 16 and runs until August 10 at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, 2nd floor of Palma Hall. Weekday shows are at 7 p.m. and weekend shows are at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. For ticket inquiries and reservations contact DUP at 981-8500 local 2449 / 2451 and 926-1349 or Luz de Luna at 09176206224.

Expect to see a lot less cigarette butts on campus as the UP administration finally implements a no smoking policy.
In an administrative order issued last September, the UP Office of the President declared that within 3 years the chancellors of UP Diliman, UP Los Banos, UP Visayas and UP Mindanao should "submit a viable smoking cessation plan that will implement a no smoking policy within the entire campus."
Citing RA 9211 or the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003 which prohibits smoking, sale and advertising of tobacco in school premises, the administration directed that "all academic core zones, the Philippine General Hospital, all infirmaries, all business concessions and all buildings housing any office or classroom of the University of the Philippines shall immediately be smoke free."
The ban includes "entrances and exits of buildings, covered areas, parking lots, patios and gardens....student tambayans, faculty rooms and all offices."
Designated smoking areas should be located outside academic core zones and not be bigger than 10 square meters. Each building should also have only one smoking area where "provisions for sitting and conversing shall not be provided." A sales and advertising ban is also being implemented where "no activity of any nature sponsored by or advertising a tobacco product may use any space within any campus." Violators will be charged with simple misconduct for the first offense and grave misconduct for subsequent offenses.
