UPD-KOREAN U. TIE-UP. UPD recently entered into an agreement
with the Gongju National University of Education of Korea for student
exchange, visiting professor program and joint research. Signing the

MSI hosts GEF-CRTR Open Forum. The Marine Science Institute (MSI),
through Professor Emeritus Edgardo D. Gomez, hosted on October 30
this year’s Synthesis Panel Open Meeting of the Global Environment
Facility (GEF) Coral Reef Targeted Research and Capacity Building
(CRTR) Program. At the forum, participants were able to discuss on
the status of the coral reefs in the Philippines and the approaches to
coral management in the country, as well as GEF projects in other parts
of the globe. The participants were later treated to a cocktail at the MSI
and dinner at the University Theater hosted by UP President
Emerlinda R. Román together with UPD Chancellor Sergio S. Cao. At
the dinner, one forum participant gamely danced the Tinikling with
the UP Pep Squad. ”

Teaching Effectiveness Course. Fifty-three faculty members attended
the 5-day experimental course leading to the design, development,
try-out and revision of teaching plans conducted by the Office of the
Director for Instruction from May 28 to June 1. Activities in the program
are structured and cummulatively sequenced to achieve the intended
learning outcomes such as the design of an effective learning program.
Two of the participants in the recent program were Mikaela Irene Fudolig
and Ariel López, two of the seven summa cum laude of the Class of 2007. .

INTENSIFYING SME’s ACCESS TO CREDIT.UPD through the Institute
of Small Scale Industries (ISSI), and the German Technical Corporation,
Small and Medium Enterprise Development for Sustainable Employment
Program (SMEDSEP), recently signed an agreement to institutionalize
small and medium enterprise (SME) finance training among rural and
thrift banks in the country to intensify lending to SMEs. Signing the
agreement were Martina Vahlhaus, SMEDSEP Manager, GTZ and UPD
Chancellor Sergio S. Cao (center). Witnesses to the signing were
(from left) ISSI Deputy Director Sonia Tiong-Aquino, Dante O. Portula
and ISSI Director Ruperto Alonzo.

THE SOCIAL SCIENTIST’S TASK. National Scientist and Rural
Sociologist Dr. Gelia T. Castillo (right) was Pi Gamma Mu’s guest,
September 25 at Palma Hall 207. Her lecture, “Finding People in
Non-People Events: The task of the Social Scientist” is about the
social issues “implicated... in agriculture.” Attending Castillo’s
lecture were University officials and faculty and students of UPD.
