The University of the Philippines Press (UPP) will hold a book sale and will launch 10 new titles on December 14.

Shoppers can expect up to 80 percent discount. The special Christmas tree decorated with miniature versions of UPP's latest books should not be missed.

UPP’s book store at Diliman is at the ground floor of Balay Kalinaw. Store hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday to Friday, with lunch breaks from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Similar sales will be held at the other branches of UPP book store in Baguio, Cebu, and Davao.

Ten new titles will be launched in the cocktail party “Paglulunsad 2007: Ikatlong Yugto at Pasasalamat,” to be held at the second floor of Balay Kalinaw.  The event is UPP's way of launching its third installment of books, which completes the UPP collection of titles for 2007.

UPP will have a booth at the Academic Oval to promote the special UPP collection for the UP Centennial.

Conference on molecular system biology slated from Feb, 25-28

The 10th International Conference on Molecular Systems Biology (ICMSB 2008) will be held at the National Institute of Science and Mathematics Education Development (NISMED), UP Diliman, from February 25 to 28, 2008.

The conference is in the tradition of nine previous workshop-style meetings that have focused on theoretical and methodological advances in biological systems analysis, their applications, and their support through novel software development.

The themes for ICMSB 2008 will address three timely subjects: Dynamical aspects of biological networks; Information infrastructure for systems biology; Systems biology, synthetic biology and genetic engineering.

The first one and a half days will offer tutorials on different aspects of modeling biological networks, to be given by experts such as Michael Savageau (UC Davis) and Eberhard Voit (Georgia Tech). A half-day workshop on "Towards the Systems Biology of Rice" will then be followed by the conference proper on February 27 to 28. Two evening poster sessions will ensure extensive networking opportunities, especially with young researchers.

Textbook on semiconductor devices and circuits now available

A First Course in Semiconductor Devices and Circuits, a textbook designed for use by students in electrical engineering and related courses, is now available at popular bookstores.

The texbook provides the foundation essential to fully understanding and truly appreciating the more advanced concepts taught in higher engineering courses. Printed in full color, it contains introductory discussions on various electronic devices, explanations on device physics and their operating characteristics, a variety of examples in practical applications, exercises to develop students’ ability to make quick-hand calculations and helpful end-of-chapter problems.

The author of the textbook is the late Dr. Jose C. Araneta, a highly respected faculty member of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD). The textbook is the culmination of his over 30 years of experience in teaching the subject. Araneta earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (cum laude) in 1968 at UPD, both his Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Master in Business Administration in 1973, also at UPD and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in the USA in 1984. He presented papers to the Department of Energy in Maryland, to the American Ceramic Society and at the University of Wisconsin. He had yearly professorial chair lectures at the University of the Philippines. For a time, he also served as the resident technical consultant for INTEL, as the Philippine Coordinator for the Japan-Philippine Exchange Program for Scientists in the Field of Engineering, and as the Scholarship Committee Chairman of the NEC Foundation, Inc.

The textbook was designed with the Filipino user in mind, is comparable to foreign books on the same subject, but is definitely more affordable. Its publication was made possible through the assistance of the University’s Textbook Writing Grant.

UP Diliman becomes smoke-free.

Expect to see a lot less cigarette butts on campus as the UP administration finally implements a no smoking policy.

In an administrative order issued last September, the UP Office of the President declared that within 3 years the chancellors of UP Diliman, UP Los Banos, UP Visayas and UP Mindanao should "submit a viable smoking cessation plan that will implement a no smoking policy within the entire campus."

Citing RA 9211 or the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003 which prohibits smoking, sale and advertising of tobacco in school premises, the administration directed that "all academic core zones, the Philippine General Hospital, all infirmaries, all business concessions and all buildings housing any office or classroom of the University of the Philippines shall immediately be smoke free."

The ban includes "entrances and exits of buildings, covered areas, parking lots, patios and gardens....student tambayans, faculty rooms and all offices."

Designated smoking areas should be located outside academic core zones and not be bigger than 10 square meters. Each building should also have only one smoking area where "provisions for sitting and conversing shall not be provided." A sales and advertising ban is also being implemented where "no activity of any nature sponsored by or advertising a tobacco product may use any space within any campus." Violators will be charged with simple misconduct for the first offense and grave misconduct for subsequent offenses.
