ILIS now School of Library and Information Studies

The Institute of Library and Information Science (ILIS) is now the School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS).

Library and Information Studies is currently the most acceptable nomenclature to refer to the field of library and information services. SLIS’ new name is more inclusive and accurately captures its full nature of research and teaching. It likewise reflects its expanded character and role as the country’s leading institution in the discipline.

SLIS was the first library science school in the country equipped with computer laboratories for teaching and learning of software packages for applications in the discipline. SLIS is also the oldest library school in the country, having offered the first library courses under the UP College of Liberal Arts. In 1916, a 4-year curriculum was developed and instituted to prepare students for profession work in libraries and for teaching library science courses. In 1961, it was established as separate academic unit named Institute of Library Science. In 2002, it was renamed ILIS.

Since then, the Institute matured into a premier institution offering an undergraduate program Bachelor of Library and Information Science and the graduate program Master of Library and Information Science. Both programs offer four tracks from which students may choose their specializations, namely: Information Systems, Archival Studies, Health and Medical Librarianship and Law Librarianship.

The change nomenclature was approved by the UP Board of Regents at its 1219th Meeting on March 29, 2007.
