OBITUARY 

Arrevillaga, 55

Rebecca San Miguel Arrevillaga, chief of the Admission and Registration (AR) section at the Office of the University Registrar (OUR), died of multiple organ failure as complications of breast cancer on November 11, 2006. She was 55.
She worked for the University for more than 30 years. She started as a research aide at the Office of Admissions in 1972. She became the Senior Admissions Assistant at the OUR in 1976, and the section chief of the AR in 1985, a position she held until her death.

She is survived by her brothers Jose and Jesus, and sister Ma. Theresa.

 

Castillo, 45

Former College of Science (CS) Secretary Dr. Maritina T. Castillo passed away on November 21, 2006 due to lung cancer. She was 45.

Castillo earned her MS Applied Mathematics from University of Illinois in 1990 and her Ph.D. in Mathematics from UPD in 1999.

She started teaching in UPD in 1986. She was the Assistant to the Chairman for Graduate Programs and Research at the Mathematics Department from May 1999 until April 2000. Castillo served as College Secretary of CS from July 2000 until May 2002.

She is survived by her husband, Roel and children Justine Mikhail Chakri, Juan Miguel Florencio, Paulo Miguel Ronaldo and Noah Miguel Dominic.

Simpas, 80

Public administration professor Santiago S. Simpas passed away on January 25 due to pneumonia. He was 80. The former vice chancellor for administration (VCA) had been undergoing treatments for cancer of the colon since November 2006.

Fondly called “SSS,” Simpas joined UP in 1968 as Training Specialist at the School of Public Administration, now National College of Public Administration and Governance (NCPAG). He rose through the ranks and became assistant professor in 1973. In the same year, he was named College Secretary, a post he held until 1982.

Simpas also served as director of the NCPAG’s Administrative Development Center, now Center for Policy and Executive Development (CPED) from 1981 until 1982. He assumed the VCA post in 1983 and served until 1986. After his stint with the UP, Simpas served as President of Leyte Institute of Technology from 1986 until 1990.
