UPD fetes retirees and service awardees.
If there is a chance for any average employee to be recognized by the University, it is at the Parangal sa mga Retirado at Gawad Paglilingkod (PRGP), the annual program mounted by the UP Diliman administration to acknowledge the services and loyalty of its faculty, administrative staff (AS) and Research, Extension and Professional Staff (REPS).
Opportunities for recognition—sponsored by the administration and the academic units themselves— abound at UPD but most, if not all, are academic. Thus, the PRGP is a welcome venue through which a university employee’s service and loyalty are acknowledged and appreciated at the end of their tenure.
This year, 89 retirees were honored at the program held at the recently renovated auditorium of Malcolm Hall on February 26. Of the total, 27 were members of the faculty, 56 were administrative personnel and seven were REPS.
All of the retired faculty members are pillars of the University, their expertise and credentials held in high esteem by their peers and their contributions in the University’s pursuit of its mandate unmatched. Eight are former deans, led by the couple Dr. Benjamin V. Carino, Jr. (School of Urban and Regional Planning) and University Professor Dr. Ledivina V. Carino (National College of Public Administration and Governance), Dr. Prosperidad C. Luis (College of Architecture), Dr. Armando S. Malay Jr., (Asian Center), Dr. Ellen Paglinauan (College of Mass Communication/CMC), Dr. Ramon Santos (College of Music), Prof. Luis Teodoro (CMC), and Dr. Romeo C. Quieta (College of Social Work and Community Development /CSWCD)
Regrettably, six of the 27 faculty members honored passed on in 2006 and 2007. Quieta died of cardiogenic pulmonary endema on June 22 last year. At the time of his death, he had just been renewed for a second term as CSWCD dean. The other departed professors were: Normita Recto (Asian Center, August 1, 2006); Monico M. Atienza (College of Arts and Letters/CAL, May 4, 2007); Rogelio Salvador L. Juliano Jr. (CAL, April 7); Aurora E. Perez (Population Institute, July 22); and Renato O. Villanueva (CAL, April 12).
The Campus Maintenance Office had the most number of retirees at nine. CAL follows with six, all of whom are academicians. In addition to the faculty members mentioned above, the other retirees were professors Anthony M. Juan Jr., Trinidad O. Regala and Edgardo M. Tiamson.
The UPD police force has been reduced with the retirement of five of its members; the same number of administrative personnel retired from the UP Law Complex.
Of the retirees, 25 percent or 22 served the University for less than 30 years. The shortest length of service was 17 years while the longest, by an administrative staff, was 46 years.
Six service awardees were also recognized for having been with UPD for more than 40 years. Of the six, three were professors, namely: Patricio B. Lazaro (CAL); Dan Reynaldo R. Magat (College of Social Sciences and Philosophy) and Evangel P. Quiwa (College of Engineering). The other awardees were Jesusa C. Burlat (University Health Service), Jaime H. Gardon (College of Human Kinetics) and Eleuteria L. Jota (University Library).
The retirees were given a medallion, a certificate and a photograph of the awarding ceremonies mounted in a diptych frame.
