A forum entitled Pagbabago sa Silid-Aralan: Kung Hindi Ngayon, Kailan? will be held at the Benitez Theater of the College of Education at the University of the Philippines, Diliman at 8:30 a.m. on December 2.
The timely discussion comes in the light of efforts from the academe to raise student achievement in underprivileged urban centers. The study was conducted by faculty members of the UP College of Education led by Dean Vivien M. Talisayon, with Balara Elementary School and Jose Laurel Sr. High School, both in Quzeon City, as research sites.
Industry players have been invited to react to the study, namely: Sec. Corazon Alma G. De Leon, Secretary General, Philippine National Red Cross; Dr. Isagani R. Cruz, former Undersecretary of Education, Critic and Playwright, and Philippine Star columnist; Atty. Emerico O. De Guzman, Champion for the Private Sector, Competitive Human Resource Working Group, National Competitiveness Council; Honorable Del R. De Guzman, Representative of 2nd District, Marikina City and Committee Chairman on Basic Education and Culture; Ms. Josefina B. Mariano, Supervising Administrative Officer and Curriculum Specialist, Department of Education.
The study used a systems approach in teacher mentoring in English, Filipino, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Based on the findings, the abovementioned subjects particularly reading and mathematics, require remediation sessions to develop critical thinking skills and concept understanding among students.
Problems in big class sizes and paucity in instructional materials, not to mention meager educational funds and lack of counseling services for both teachers and students, were noted by the study.
The study is funded by an Open Grant from the Office of the Chancellor through the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Development.
The forum is free and open to the public.
