What’s UP accepts announcements of any activity on campus. Copy should not exceed 500 words, and must contain the following: title of event, description, date and time of activity, sponsoring group/organization, contact numbers and ticket prices, if applicable. Photos and images will also be accepted, provided these are in jpeg format, with 300 dpi and not exceeding 5 inches in size. Email copy and images separately to updio@up.edu.ph . Announcements should be forwarded at least one month prior to the activity’s schedule.

JUNE 19: UP Naming Mahal at ang Ating Inang-bayan, Prof. Cecilia A. Florencio, June 19, NISMED Auditorium, 2 p.m.

Prof. Cecilia A. Florencio is a retired University Professor of the College of Home Economics (CHE). Prior to her retirement, she served as dean of CHE from 1990 to 1996 and chair of the Department of Food Science and Nutrition from 1971 to 1972.

Among her many awards and recognitions in the University are: UP Scientist III (2006), UP International Publication Award (2000, 2002, 2004), President’s Diploma for Outstanding Extension/Community Service (1988), President’s Diploma for Outstanding Teacher (1988), Professorial Award in Nutrition by the UP Alumni Association (1985), and Distinguished Record of Achievement in Nutrition by the UP CHE Alumni Association (1984).

In the national level, she was recognized as one of the Filipino Women in Health Sciences 1900-2000 by the National Academy of Science and Technology (2000). Florencio was also given the Special Award in Nutrition and as one of the Thirty Leaders in Nutrition-Dietetics in the Philippines by the Nutritionists-Dietitians Association of the Philippines, both in 1985.

Florencio also served as a member of the Panel of Eminent Experts on Ethics in Food Nutrition and Agriculture of the Food and Agriculture Organization based in Rome from 2004 to 2007, and the Virtual Network of Experts to assist in the Implementation of the Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health, a project of the World Health Organization in 2004.

Florencio earned her BSHE from UP in 1961; her MS in Nutrition from University of Iowa, USA in 1964; and her Ph.D. in Nutrition from Michigan State University, East Lanching, Michigan, USA in 1967.
