The University of the Philippines Archaeological Society is a graduate
student organization of the U.P. Archaeological Studies Program (ASP). The
Society was formed in 14 October 1998.
On November 23, 2007 (Friday), 7:05pm, members and interested members of
ArchaeoSoc met and discussed the importance of the society and the possible
changes that can be done regarding the aims, visions, membership requirements,
and future activities. The meeting was called by Dr. Armand Salvador B. Mijares.
Names of the attendants were noted. The history of ArchaeoSoc was established
and the mandates discussed.
The first ArchaeoSoc president Dr. Grace Barretto-Tesoro related the previous
tasks of ArchaeoSoc as a possible guide to future responsibilities. These
entailed:
- contacting visiting professors and organizing their lectures
- organizing exhibits in Palma Hall
- looking for other activities that will help promote archaeology in the
Philippines
With this, Dr. Grace Barretto-Tesoro also shared the problems she faced as
president of the society, revealing the questions that are needed to establish
and affirm the responsibilities of the members. Jane Carlos took over the
discussion hereon, discussing some of the major points that Dr. Mijares and Dr.
Barretto-Tesoro gave. Some of the important points were:
- What is the role of ArchaeoSoc to the community?
- What are the roles of the members of ArchaeoSoc?
- How can the society be structured, considering the demands and needs of
a graduate community?
The structure and aims of the community were also scrutinized, given that the
expectations from a graduate community are different from the accustomed
undergraduate community.
Structure
Although still far from being wholly approved, a skeleton structure was
created based on committees with committee heads. This is not the final
decision and we welcome your views regarding the matter.
- convenor
This person is in charge of representing the student body in faculty
meetings, to give voice to student concerns. This person should also have an
overview of the activities of every committee, and thus must understand how
every committee works, have a clear sight of the goal of each activity, and
must balance and distribute needed information to and from other committees,
to ensure the smooth running of the society.
- internal committee
Members of this committee must work on the administrative requirements of
each activity, which involves keeping documents and keeping track of the
activities.
- external committee
Members of this committee must work on other works that will help in
producing activities for the society. These involve work that will help in
distributing information regarding archaeology, including exhibits, etc.
- finance committee
The head of this committee and its members are in charge of keeping track of
the finances of the society. They are also in charge of finding sponsors to
help with the financial needs, produce ideas that may contribute to the
finances, and include the balancing of the available funds for the entire
semester/school year.
Roles
The roles of ArchaeoSoc are still unclear, although there have been
suggestions. There are still some suggestions on how these roles and
responsibilities will be done, especially when considering the structure of the
community. This is not the final decision and we welcome your views regarding
the matter.
- public archaeology
Promoting heritage awareness through various activities, including
Sandbox Archaeology, building websites or promoting activities through
the World Wide Web, or making exhibits. They may also find ways to raise
awareness through establishing contact with other graduate communities
around the world to help exchange ideas and even work.
- publication
It was suggested that the Test Pit will be the responsibility of
ArchaeoSoc. Brochures and articles and information for the website may also
be their responsibility.
- administrative (internal)
It was also suggested that documentation of each activity will be tracked,
thus requiring the detailing of administrative needs. Social events, such as
the UP Lantern Parade and other activities may also be handled under this
specification.
The information provided here are not final. Interested members of ArchaeoSoc,
please talk to other students and do not hesitate to give suggestions to Jane
Carlos through her email
