DOCTORAL PROGRAM Academic
Information The program of study will vary according to the individual student's needs, interest and preparation. To receive the degree, a student must satisfy the following requirements Breadth Requirements (18 credit units) The student must demonstrate an understanding of basic management theory and practice by completing courses in the following areas: accounting, finance, marketing, economics, human behavior in organizations, operations management and quantitative methods. These requirements may be met by the satisfactory completion of specific MBA courses or equivalent academic training. Foundation Requirements (12 credit units) The study of business administration has for its foundation ideas and methods from three disciplines: economics, quantitative methods, and behavioral science. These disciplines provide the foundation needed by the student to do research in his/her special field of interest in management. Major Field Requirements (15 credit units) A student must take advanced courses in a chosen field of specialization, including a research methods course in the discipline, to develop competence for scholarly doctoral research in that field. Successful applicants to the program are informed by the Ph.D. Program Director of the fields of specialization offered by the CBA, which are based on the available faculty resources of the College. Currently, the major fields of the Ph.D. Program are Finance and Business Policy. Comprehensive Examination The course work for the doctoral program requires the completion of a minimum of 27 units of course work if the student has a master's degree, or a minimum of 45 units if he/she has a bachelor's degree only. Upon completion of the required courses in a student's program of study, he/she shall take a comprehensive examination in his/her field of specialization. Research Paper The student must submit a research paper which will demonstrate his/her ability to do independent scholarly research. The paper must be completed before the student takes the comprehensive examination. Dissertation (12 credit units) The final phase of the program is the completion of a doctoral
dissertation. The dissertation is a scholarly piece of original work that
demonstrates a student's capacity for independent research. |
