ADVOCACY VIDEO:
CREATION TO PRODUCTION

After a well-attended half-day talk on advocacy video, Surf Reyes gives the full coverage of his module on advocacy filmmaking with emphasis on creative story-telling and techniques. The workshop is open to anyone who intends to use video for advocacy and those who would like to venture into filmmaking with a heart.
The Resource Person:
Surf Reyes was founding Director of the Mowelfund Film Institute, and also taught filmmaking in schools and universities. Articulate and self-giving, some of his students include Raymond Red, Mac Alejandre, Bing Lao, and many others who are now writers, directors and cinematographers in their own fields in advertising and cinema.

May it be defiance or deconstruction, the workshop presents the montage of styles and limitless possibilities of experimental filmmaking. Expect the workshop to be methodical in approach and yet, non-conventional.
The Resource Person:
Sari Lluch Dalena is a Fulbright scholar and independent filmmaker
with a Master's Degree in Film Production from New York University .
Her feature documentary "Memories of a Forgotten War" (a documentary
on the Philippine American War of 1899) was the closing film at the
Documentary Fortnight in New York City 's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
Two of her short films, "Little Crosses" and "Church Dogs" won the
Gawad URIAN for Best Short Film. Her first feature film, "Rigodon" was
awarded Best Feature Film at the International Panorama of Independent
Filmmakers in Athens , Greece . It was screened at numerous
international film festivals, as well as the Smithsonian Institute and
the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). She is the recipient of Cultural Center of the Philippine's 13 Artists Award, the Asian Cultural Council Fellowship, and the Starr Foundation Award.

A plethora of theories and models on understanding cinema has swamped our school libraries. Here is a chance to understand cinema from the queer perspective. You can breeze through your film reviews and reaction papers next semester after taking this. If you are a student, a film critic or professor who would like to write beyond formula, you should take this course.
The Resource Person:
Lorna Israel is a master of queer analysis from the perspective of the viewer. Israel has published local and international articles on queer theory, fundamentalisms, and feminisms. Israel is teaches Queer Cinema and Mass Media & Society courses at the UP Film Institute.

WRITING ABOUT FILMS:
FILM APPRECIATION FOR THE YOUNG

The workshop is intended for high school, college students and young professionals (ages 13 to 30 years old). Participants will learn to “read” films and be able to write about films in the form of reviews, blog-entries, school papers, analytical articles. They will learn to do a personal rating of a movie and articulate why the movie "sings, sinks in deep, or sucks." Exposure to world cinema (both shorts and fill-length) and film gems is a plus.
The Resource Person:Patrick F. Campos is a faculty member of the UP Film Institute, a writer, and a film/literary scholar. Some of his recent articles include "Looming Over the Nation, Uneasy with the Folks: Locating the Mike de Leon in Philippine Cinema" (Humanities Diliman), "Trivia as History" and "Necessary History" (Plaridel), and "Desiring Manila, Or How National Artists and a Mayor Visually Imagine Terra Incognita" (Philippine Communication Society). He is also a filmmaker and musician.

CURATING FOR CINEMA

As changing patterns in consumption of films call for innovative approaches to bringing the art of motion picture to audiences, UP Film Institute offers a new workshop course, Curating for Cinema. Learn the rudiments of mounting film events to suit various institutional needs in the context of new ways by which contemporary cinema can occupy a distinct place in society. Ideal for cultural workers, event organizers, project specialists both from the public and private sector. Slots are limited and participants are encouraged to each have a specific film event in mind to develop all throughout the hands-on sessions. The course begins with a pilot session on May 21 with schedule of succeeding sessions to be determined among the participants themselves to allow for the most flexible and feasible means for them to individually map out the tasks and requirements of the film event they bring into the workshop. Prior to workshop proper, interested participants will have to undergo consultations.
The Resource Person:
Conducting the workshop is UP Film Institute’s resident programmer, Nonoy Lauzon. He holds double degrees in Philosophy and Humanities from UP Diliman and has been an active member of the Film Desk of the Young Critics Circlefounded in 1990.

APRIL. Participants who enroll in and finish any of the courses will
be given certificates of participation.
The UPFI is the country's first and only degree-granting film school,
