THE NEW GONZALO W. GONZALEZ READING ROOM
In honor of the late Gonzalo W. Gonzalez, former President of the University of the Philippines, his family, led by her daughter Atty. Gizela M. Gonzalez-Montinola, funded the establishment of a reading room housing a vast and still growing collection of Filipiniana and books on literary craft. The reading room plays an important role for Likhaan being a respected repository of published materials by Filipino authors.
At 10:00 a.m. of September 22, 1997, the first Gonzalo Gonzalez Reading Room was inaugurated at the third floor of the U.P. Faculty Center. The reading room was set up through an endowment from the family of the late Gonzalo W. Gonzalez, graduate of the U.P. College of Law and member of the U.P. Board of Regents. The reading room served as a resource center for U.P. writers and literature students.
From its small but valuable Filipiniana collection, the reading room’s accession list has grown significantly over the years. To address the need for space and better facilities, the Gonzalo Gonzalez Reading Room has been transferred to the U.P. College of Arts and Letters Library. The new reading room is a repository for contemporary Philippine and other Asian literatures and is meant for use primarily by students, faculty, and staff of the University of the Philippines. It remains under the aegis of the Likhaan: U.P. Institute of Creative Writing through the continued support of the Gonzalez family.
