LIKHAAN JOURNAL 5

by Arvin Abejo Mangohig

The blind refereed journal is a curious invention, more so in the Philippines where smaller and smaller circles move about in familiar circumspection, writers sizing each other up on the basis of a name, a face, a reputation. What is accepted for publication may not necessarily be the best; what sees print may be out of friendship, tokenism, or “utang na loob.”

That the fifth incarnation of Likhaan: The Journal of Contemporary Literature 5 may actually be its best yet is testimony to the process and integrity of the blind system. Generously funded by the office of the UP Diliman Chancellor, the UP Institute of Creative Writing has put out four issues of the Likhaan Journal, a stellar set of finely winnowed works in Filipino and English edited by current director Jose Y. Dalisay, National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, and Jun Cruz Reyes, respectively. This Likhaan 5 is edited by College of Mass Communications Dean and ICW fellow Rolando B. Tolentino, with associates Romulo Baquiran Jr. and Charlson Ong as associate editors. Karl Fredrick M. Castro was cover design/layout artist.

Short stories included in the Likhaan Journal 5 are “Huling Bakunawa” by Allan N. Derain; “Last Resort” by Glenn Diaz; “Perdition Plain” by Russell Stanley Geronimo; “Three Kisses” by Ma. Elena L. Paulma; “Ang Ama at Ina ng Isang Epiko” by Jun Cruz Reyes; and “Delphi” by Luna Sicat-Cleto. A graphic short story, “A Short Story and a Handful of Tragedy” by Seigfred Cabral, is included for the first time in the history of the Journal.

The poetry section is composed of “Unang Orasyonal” by Rio Alma; “Mula sa Engkantado” by Mark Angeles; “Loser at Iba Pang Tula” by Lolito Go; “Sharing Spaces and Other Poems” by Gabriela Lee; and “Luksang-Pati Para Kay Alex Remollino at Iba Pang Tula” by National Artist for Literature Bienvenido L. Lumbera.

The essays are “To Write” by Gémino H. Abad; “Nanay” by Eli Rueda Guieb III; “The Turn for Home: Memories of Santa Ana Park” by Jenny Ortuoste; “Fire In Ice” by Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo; and “Ang Aking Gubat” by Ellen Sicat.

Charlson Ong interviews National Artist for Literature F. Sionil Jose while Luna Sicat Cleto talks to Lualhati Bautista of Dekada ’70 fame, intimate and animated portraits of best-selling authors rendered by fellow writers.

An invaluable annotated bibliography by managing editor Jayson Petras and a translation into English of the introduction, notes from the associate editors and the anonymous referees, and the bibliography make Likhaan 5 an exemplar for journals in the country. Yes, it keeps its nodding acquaintances and familiar friends, but what stays during the referee system, despite--and perhaps because of--the new and strange names, is the truest and best picture of contemporary Philippine literature.

The Likhaan 5 will be launched on Writers Night 2011 at the UP Diliman.

UP WRITERS NIGHT 2011

Bring a Book! Your Ticket to Writers Night 2011

For around 15 years, the LIKHAAN: UP Institute of Creative Writing has been hosting the Writers Night, an annual reunion and Christmas Party that has become a tradition among writers, artists and lovers of the written word. This year's Writers Night will be a toast to the country's newest literary productions, kicking off with the Madrigal-Gonzalez Award and on to a variety of book launches and performances.

In celebration of their recent literary achievements, we are inviting all writers to bring a copy of their latest book to the event. These books will earn a place in the Gonzalo-Gonzalez Reading Room collection, which boasts of the best in contemporary Philippine literature. We also welcome literary books by non-Filipino authors for the UP Writers Club fund-raiser.

UP Writers Night 2011 is happening on December 9, Friday, from 5:00 PM onward. The 11th Madrigal-Gonzalez Best First Book Award will showcase this year's finalists in a forum on contemporary literature and an awarding ceremony. What follows are the launch of LIKHAAN Journal 5, the latest issue of the UP ICW's prestigious refereed journal and the first to be widely available online; the launch of UST books; and the presentation and launch of the project AKDANG BUHAY: The Writerly Life. The evening's festivities also include performances, open mic and a book bazaar.

The U.P. National Writers Workshop was reformatted five years ago to address a dearth in the mentoring of writers in mid-career. What before was a workshop that honed emerging talent mostly from the nation’s universities and colleges is now a workshop that focuses on writers who have already published, or are on the verge of publishing, a book or have won major literary awards.  In effect, the new format caters to writers who have moved up from the beginner level.

The UP ICW is the only institution that offers a workshop of this caliber in the country. The function for beginner writers that the UP ICW vacated for the new workshop format is filled by the workshops held by other writing centers from the other universities in the country.

Aside from subjecting works in progress to workshops with the most admired names in Philippine contemporary literature, the UP National Writers Workshop provides a venue for discussion of the participants’ respective writing processes. It also allows participants to interact with local writers through special activities organized by the UP ICW and Baguio-based groups. As an outreach activity, the UP ICW has partnered with the University of the Philippines Baguio to hold an annual public lecture by an eminent writer. The lecture coincides with the workshop and is held in universities and colleges in and around Baguio City.

Almario will be on a sabbatical during the workshop and will not be joining the panel this year.

Unlike most national writing workshops, the UP National Writers Workshop is only for advanced writers. The UP ICW is the lone institution that holds a workshop of this kind in the country. The current workshop format was borne out of the need to address the dearth of venues for writers in mid-career to exchange ideas on their craft and their current literary projects.

Prior to the new format, the UP ICW has held the annual UP National Writers Workshop for the country’s most promising beginning writers since the 1960s. Through the years other writing centers of other universities have instituted their own workshops for beginning writers, thus freeing the UP ICW to address other concerns.

To qualify for the workshop, writers must satisfy the following requirements. (1) must be writers in English or Filipino; (2) must have attended at least one creative writing workshop (national/regional, including the UP National Writers’ Workshops), or earned a degree in Creative Writing/Malikhaing Pagsulat, or won at least one national/international literary award; (3) must have published at least three poems or two short stories or two pieces of creative nonfiction (e.g., essays, memoirs, profiles) in reputable collections or anthologies, journals, magazines (including campus publications), or refereed Internet web magazines, or have had a stage- or screenplay produced.

61st Palanca Awards Call for Entries

61st Palanca Awards currently accepts entries

Foundation opens anew the Novel category for writers

Early submission of entries to The Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature (Palanca Awards), the country’s most prestigious and longest-running literary contest, has been noted. With the deadline for submission of entries on midnight of April 30, 2011 in sight, early bird contestants are avoiding the last minute queue and making sure that their entries are already submitted before the deadline.

This year, the Palanca Awards is accepting entries for the Novel category. The Novel category is open every three years, in both English and Filipino divisions.

The following are the regular categories: English Division – Short Story, Short Story for Children, Essay, Poetry, Poetry for Children, One-act Play, and Full-length Play; Filipino Division – Maikling Kuwento, Maikling Kuwentong Pambata, Sanaysay, Tula, Tulang Pambata, Dulang May Isang Yugto, Dulang Ganap ang Haba, and Dulang Pampelikula; Regional Languages Division – Short Story-Cebuano, Short Story-Hiligaynon and Short Story-Iluko. Each contestant may submit only one entry per category.

To encourage the youth to hone their literary genius, the Palanca Awards also welcomes essays under the Kabataan Division – its special division for young writers below 18 years old. This year’s Kabataan Essay theme for the English category is “What is the most valuable lesson I learned from the Internet?” and “Ano ang pinakamahalagang aral ang aking natutunan mula sa Internet?” for the Filipino category.

The literary contest is open to all Filipino (or former Filipino) citizens, except current officers and employees of its organizing body, the Carlos Palanca Foundation, Inc. Contest rules and official entry forms are available at Palanca Awards’ official website, www.palancaawards.com.ph.

Entries with complete requirements may be submitted to the Foundation’s office at the 6th Floor, One World Square Bldg., 10 Upper McKinley Road, McKinley Hill Town Center, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City or may also be entered online through the Palanca Awards website or sent through email at cpawards@palancaawards.com.ph.

Contestants are reminded to submit their entries ahead of the deadline for submission, which is midnight of April 30, 2011. Winners will be announced on September 1, 2011.

Established in 1950 in honor of Don Carlos Palanca Sr., the Awards aims to help develop Philippine literature by providing incentives for writers to craft their most outstanding literary works that reflect the Filipino culture and values, and to serve as a treasury of Philippine literary gems.

To date, the Palanca Awards has awarded a total of 1,994 works to 1,963 writers, which include 514 short stories, 360 poetry collections, 202 essays, 340 one-act plays, 176 full-length plays, 60 teleplays, 51 screenplays, 142 stories for children, 34 futuristic fiction stories, 71 Kabataan essays, 34 novels, and 10 collections of poetry for children.
