GRANTS AND AWARDS
In its pursuit for excellence in creative writing, Likhaan opens the following opportunities to any exemplary Filipino writers:
National Fellowship
Prominent writers in the different literary genres are awarded fellowships in recognition of their accomplishment over the years, in exchange for which they submit book-length works and deliver fellowship lectures in The Living Voice-in-Conversation Series.
The Francisco Arcellana Scholarship in Creative Writing
The Arcellana Scholarship is granted in honor of the late National Artist for Literature Francisco Arcellana, founding director of the Likhaan. The scholarship is awarded to any undergraduate student of Creative Writing or Malikhaing Pagsulat in UP. Beneficiary receives monthly allowance for a year from the family of the late National Artist.
Madrigal-Gonzalez Best First Book Award
The Madrigal Gonzalez Best First Book Award is given annually by the Likhaan: University of the Philippines Institute of Creative Writing to the writer of the best first book published within a two-year period. The award is under the auspices of the Madrigal Gonzalez family and alternates between English and Filipino writers. The winner receives a plaque of recognition and a cash prize of P50,000.00 from the Madrigal Gonzalez family. A forum involving the finalists usually precedes the awarding ceremony, which coincides with UP Writers Night.
Gawad Likhaan: The UP Centennial Literary Prize (2008)
The UP Centennial Literary Prize is a literary contest celebrating the centennial of UP. Gawad Likhaan, which was open for all Filipino writers, granted awards for six categories: poetry, tula, novel or short story collection, Nobela o Koleksyon ng mga Katha sa Filipino, Drama or Filmscript in Filipino, creative nonfiction, Creative Nonfiction in English and Malikhaing Sanaysay.
Gawad Direktor
This Certificate of Recognition is given during the annual Writers Night to an alumni of the UP National Writers Workshops who have won major literary prizes for the year.
