Islam as a Religion of Peace
Forum

Prof. Ibrahim Al-Hawas and Prof. Maftah Ahhdi of the World Islamic Call Society, an international Libyan based organization lectured on the topic: “Islam as a Religion of Peace”  on July 04 at the Bulwagang Salam, Romulo Hall, UP Diliman.  The lecturers highlighted some of the Islamic concepts on peace and goodwill to attain peaceful co-existence among people regardless of their religious and cultural differences.  Prof. Al-Hawas emphasized Islamic injunctions that promote religious tolerance.

 Media and Islam Forum

On August 29, the IIS hosted a roundtable discussion on “Media and Islam” at the IIS library.  The resource person is the 2005 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication, Mr. Matiur Rahman, a Bangladesh national and publisher of the popular daily newspaper.  Mr. Rahman talked on the role of the media as an effective tool in shaping public opinion and raising social awareness.  Being a responsible media practitioner himself, Mr. Rahman’s advocacy on women’s right led him to expose the plight of the victims of acid throwing cases in Bangladesh.

Asia Forum

Dr. Osman Bakar, Malaysia Chair of Islam in Southeast Asia, gave a lecture on Democratization in Muslim Communities in Southeast Asia on September 13, 2005 at the UP Bulwagang Salam.  The forum was co-sponsored by the Philippine Council for Islam and Democracy (PCID)..  Film Showing-
ISLAM: Empire  of Faith

The IIS marked its 20th founding anniversary last November 24, 2005.  Dean Carmen Abubakar led the opening of the program with a film showing titled, “Islam: Empire of Faith” which depicts the growth of Islam from the time of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) up to the Ottoman empire highlighting the expansion and evolution of the Islamic civilization.  The contribution of Islamic civilization to the various fields of sciences were discussed.

 Prof. Abdulhusin Kashim graced the affair as a resource person during the open forum.▲
