History

The creation of NISMED Library came about as an offshoot of the need to support the information and research needs of the institute.

The functions of NISMED are three-pronged: research, curriculum development, and extension. A shift in  program goal in the early 90’s invariably affected both the acquisition and services rendered by the Library to its users. However, the Library had to remain faithful to its mandate, and  with the outpouring of donations from the British Council, the Asia Foundation, and one of NISMED academic staff, the Library managed to provide the demands of the clientele.

Services have to be upgraded too and under the Library Modernization Program of former President  Francisco Nemenzo, Jr., the University Library embarked on the automation of libraries on campus. A university library system was established linking all the libraries on campus to the University Library. Online resources are subscribed and can now be accessed by students, faculty, REPS and staff.

Mission-Vision

The library envisions to be a user-oriented environment conducive to scholarly inquiry and responsive to the informative and research needs primarily for NISMED academic staff and secondarily, for UP students and faculty and non UP researchers. To fulfill this mission, it seeks to provide access to materials of various formats; equip users with skills in identifying, locating, evaluating, and synthesizing information, and maintain a linkage with the University Library for a continuous collaboration in expanding the resources and services to users.

Goals

In order to best achieve its commitment, the library staff strive to:

  • seek innovative approaches to serve their clientele in the best way possible;

  • meet customers’ informational needs by providing complete up-to-date information;

  • listen to customers and respond to their needs and concerns.
