Abstract

This study suggests the existence of a constructivist and a behaviorist teaching profile in the teaching of mathematics thematically. A survey was conducted among 122 secondary mathematics teachers in the Metropolitan Sydney area in Australia . Correlation and factor analyses and analysis of teachers’ responses to open-ended questions of the survey, followed by interviews, indicate that these two pedagogical constructs act as internal influences governing teachers’ mathematical beliefs and their espoused instructional practices.
