Ph.D. in Psychology

(Area of Concentration: Philippine Psychology)

Philippine Psychology is the study of Psychology bourne out of the Filipino experience and world view. Philippine Psychology draws its ideas from the culture, thought, perspectives, society, and history of the Filipino people. Philippine Psychology is also a systematic and scientific approach to knowledge using methods that are appropriate to the Filipino experience.

As an area of specialization under the doctoral program, the goal of this program is to provide the student with knowledge and competence in developing the theory, method and application of Philippine Psychology.

During their first years in the program, Ph.D. students take a core of courses designed to provide comprehensive coverage of conceptual and methodological issues in psychology. In the succeeding years, students enlist in advanced courses and seminars in which particular topics are considered intensively. The program culminates in a in three areas (concepts and methods, the major area of specialization, and a minor area) and in the research.

Students working towards the doctorate may qualify for an M.A. degree in psychology by taking and passing in all of the three areas tested in the comprehensive examinations. The interested student should, however, apply for the MA degree in a formal letter addressed to the of the department upon qualifying for Ph.D. candidacy.
