Beverly Shangkuan is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, where she conducts the Residential College Singers and the University of Michigan Opera Chorus. She is also the assistant conductor of the Chamber Choir and co-conductor of the Orpheus Singers.

Her recent conducting and academic awards include the 2011 Levi Barbour Fellowship from the University of Michigan, the 2010 Phyllis Curtin Career Entry Award from the Yale School of Music, the 2010 Margot Fassler Award and the 2009 Hugh Giles Prize from the Yale Institute of Sacred Music.

In 2009, Beverly won first prize at the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) National Graduate Conducting Competition, the most prestigious national conducting competition in the United States. Most recently, she was invited to be a conducting fellow at the 2012 Chorus America National Choral-Orchestral Masterclass in New York City.

Beverly has attended choral conducting masterclasses under Paul Hillier, Simon Halsey, Masaaki Suzuki, Nicholas McGegan, Dale Warland, Gary Thor-Wedow, Philip Brunelle, Frank Nemhauser, HannalotePadal, and HelmuthRillingShe has also participated in orchestral conducting masterclasses under David Hayesand Jacques Lacombe. As a pianist, she won first prize in the Philippines’ National Music Competitions for Young Artists and received a “High Honors” award in the New Jersey Music Teachers’ Association competition.

Prior to doing doctoral work, Beverly received a Bachelor of Music (summa cum laude) from the University of the Philippines and a Master of Music from the Yale School of Music and the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. From 2008 - 2010, she was assistant conductor and ensemble manager of the Yale Camerata and co-conductor of the Yale University Church Choir and the Marquand Chapel Choir.
