Ma. Patricia Brillantes-Silvestre has a Bachelor of Music degree in Musicology, cum laude (1988) from the College of Music and a Master of Arts in Spanish (1998) from the College of Arts and Letters, University of the Philippines. She also obtained a Diploma Basico de Español Como Lengua Extranjera (1992) from the University of Salamanca through the former Centro Cultural de la Embajada de España (now Instituto Cervantes). Her interests and specializations lie in the domains of Historical Musicology and Fil-Hispanic music and culture. Published works include the essay "Liturgical Musicology" and a number of entries on Philippine music and composers in the CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art, Vol. VI (CCP, 1994); and "Chronicles of Music in the Heart of Manila", in the anthology Quiapo: Heart of Manila, (2006) published by The Cultural Studies Program, Department of Sociology-Anthropology, Ateneo de Manila University and the Metropolitan Museum of Manila. Forthcoming is the essay "Music and History in the Manila of Marcelo Adonay" in Marcelo Adonay, an anthology and critical edition of the life and music of the renowed 19th century composer and maestro de capilla of San Agustin Church in Intramuros, to be published by the University of the Philippines Press.
She has also written a number of papers for various fora: "Retrieving the Past: Translation in Musicology" (2nd Conference in Music History and Paleography, Bohol, 1998); "Heightening Musicological Awareness" (3rd Conference-Workshop on Heritage Musicology, Bohol, 2000); "Reliving the Antipolo Virgin's Journeys: Translation of Musicology" (MUSIC Colloquia, UP College of Music, 2000); "Intramuros and Quiapo: Convergence and Concelebration in Manila, Past and Present" (1st Meeting of the Philippine Musicological Society, UP College of Music, 2002) and "Music in Quiapo: The Roots, Rhythms and Transfigurations of a Cultural Heritage" (14th Annual Manila Studies Conference, Intramuros, 2004). She has done research, fieldwork, and acted as consultant for varied projects, notable among which was the Philippine Program at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington D.C. in 1998. She has also served as editor for the College of Music Newsletter in 2000-2001 and for the book The Other Stories, a collection of Philippine short stories in Spanish translated into English, published by the UP College of Arts and Letters. She has also done translations and criticism of material on Philippine music in Spanish such as the writings of Pedro Paterno, Manuel Walls y Merino and Fray Pedro Murillo-Velarde.
Professor Silvestre was
formerly with the UP Madrigal Singers and AUIT (a vocal ensemble specializing
in 20th century Filipino choral music, and was active as keyboardist, vocalist
and musical arranger for Performing Arts, Inc. and Chase International. She
is currently a board member of the Philippine Musicological Society.
