Patricia Brillantes-Silvestre has degrees in Musicology (BM, cum
laude) and Spanish (M.A.) from the College of Music and College of Arts and
Letters, respectively, from the University of the Philippines, Diliman. She
also obtained a Diploma Básico de Español como Lengua Extranjera
from the University of Salamanca, Spain, through the Centro Cultural de la
Embajada de Filipinas (now Instituto Cervantes). Her background in music and
Spanish has led her into scholarship in the areas of Historical and Urban
Musicology involving the Spanish heritage, and Fil-Hispanic music and culture.
She has written a number of papers for various symposia both local and international.

Prof. Silvestre was formerly with the UP Madrigal
Singers, with which she has gone on local and international
concert tours, and with AUIT, a vocal chamber ensemble specializing in modern
Filipino choral music. She was active as keyboardist, vocalist and musical
director for theater groups. She has done fieldwork, research and writing
for diverse music-related projects such as the Order of the National Artist
Awards, Philippine Folklife Program held at the Smithsonian Institution (at
which she was also presentor) and the Many Musics Action Program (for the
Americas, Iberian nations and the Caribbean) of the International Music Council.
Her masteral work is a translation and critical analysis of source readings
on Philippine music in the Spanish language, including writings by Pedro Paterno,
Manuel Walls y Merino and Fray Pedro Murillo-Velarde.
