Prof. Edna Marcil “Michi” Martinez is a graduate of the U.P. College of Music. She holds a Teacher’s Diploma in Viola, a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Literature and a Master of Music Degree in Musicology. She hold the distinction as the first Viola graduate of the University of the Philippines.

Michi Martinez was a member of the Phil. Youth Orchestra, then moved on to be a part of the Professional Orchestras - Metro Manila Symphony Orchestra, the Manila Chamber Orchestra, and the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra. She continues to do collaborative work with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra and at times the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra as guest violist; for their concert seasons, special concerts or recordings. She has been part of the Philippine orchestras which performed with international artists such as: tenors Luciano Pavarotti, Carreras, Andrea Bocelli, pianists Cecile Licad and Peter Donohue. Michi is a founding-member of the Athenaeum String Quartet, the only all-female quartet in the country since 1985, and is also one of the founding members of the Clarion Chamber Ensemble; for which she has been performing regularly as violist for its concert seasons since its founding in 2001.

At present, Michi is teaching full-time and is chair of the Strings and Chamber Music Department of the U.P. College of Music and has been co-faculty in charge and conductor of the U.P. Symphonic Orchetra and the U.P. String Chamber Orchestra respectively. Michi continues to keep active her career as a Musicologist. She was part of the Research Team for the Smithsonian Folklife Festival that featured the Philippines in 1998 at Washington D.C., USA. Michi was also the music researcher of the museology team that established the Museo Ilokos in Laoag, Ilocos Norte in 2000. She has just co-authored the book on Marcelo Adonay, a leading Filipino composer in the early 19th century. The first volume is being published by the U.P. Press and will be out mid-part of this year.
