Musical Director and Conductor

The U.P. Jazz Ensemble is a university-based jazz group which was founded in 1977. Prof. Rayben R. Maigue, the musical director and conductor of the group is an accomplished trumpet player, composer, and arranger. He has helped establish the group then and even now continues to widen jazz appreciation in the country. The big band has about 18 to 25 members. The group plays music which range from the known standard composers and arrangers as well as Filipino contemporary jazz composers. Aside from the main group of about four to ten member are quite active professionally. In effect, the U.P. Jazz Ensemble has served as a training ground for student arrangers, composers and conductors, and has spawned many of our country’s young professional jazz musicians.
