HISTORICAL SKETCH

The COLLEGE OF MUSIC of the University of the Philippines, located on the Diliman campus, was created by Philippine Legislature Act No., 2623, introduced by Senator Joaquin Luna, brother of national heroes Juan and Antonio and was enacted on the 4th of February 1916, to with:

ACT NO. 2623: An appropriating P10,000 for the establishment and maintenance of the
Conservatory of Music. Section

1.-There is thereby appointed, out of any funds in the Insular Treasury not otherwise
appropriated, the sum of P10,000 to be expended for the establishment, installation and
maintenance in the City of Manila of a School of Music which shall be a department of the
University of the Philippines. Section

2.-The Board of Regent of the University of the Philippines is hereby authorized to appoint a
Director who shall be at the same time be the Dean, and such professors as may be necessary for the school hereby establishment and fix their salaries.
