UP JAZZ ENSEMBLE

The UP Jazz Ensemble is a University based jazz group which has helped widen jazz
appreciation in the country since its founding in 1977. Consisting mostly of students and
alumni of the College, the group plays music which range from the known standard
composers and arrangers as well as contemporary composers.

The UP Jazz Ensemble with Prof. Reymundo "Rayben" Ruiz Maigue present musical director and conductor, helped establish the group. An accomplished trumpet player, composer, and arranger, Rayben guides the ensemble's development thru performances in the University of the Philippines and other events in Metro Manila to foster the appreciation of jazz in the country. Many professional jazz musicians aas well as student arrangers, composers and conductors have trained with the U.P. Jazz Ensemble.

The U.P. Jazz Ensemble's repertoire ranges from the works of known standard composers and arrangers like Sammy Nestico, George Gershwin, and Count Basie to those of contemporary composers such as Bob James, Maurice White, Tom Scott, and Bob Mintzer and others, as well as Bobby Enriquez, Richie Quirino and of course Angel Peña.
