Course Title: Reading Dance

 

            Course Description:   An approach to understanding dance as art and as cultural phenomenon.

 

            Prerequisite:  None

 

            Course Credits:  3 Units

Course Outline

 

INTRODUCTION (2 weeks)

 

A. 1   Dance perceived as a personal expression in themes, time, space and       dynamics.

 

A. 2   The medium of dance and its allied media for composition and expression.

 

A. 3   Dance tradition in society through a) Philippine and global examples, b) individual and communal manifestations and interfaces, c)  relation of production and  reception.

                       

           UNDERSTANDING THE CREATION OF DANCE  (6 WEEKS)

 

            B. 1   Creating and presenting dance with readings, viewings and basic compositional exercises.

        

            B. 2   Dance as folk expression in rites, social functions and other forms of celebrations.

 

            B. 3   Theatrical constructs of dance: aesthetic traditions, psychological and social  factors, modes of collaboration.

 

            B. 4   Educational and therapeutic functions of dance.

 

            B.5    Examination

 

 

            RECEIVING AND READING DANCE  (6 WEEKS)

 

            C. 1   Modes of representation as experienced by the audience.

 

            C. 2   Social and cultural dimensions and dynamics of dance.

 

            C. 3   Philippine dance in national and global contexts.

 

            C. 4   Problems in reading dance: on the critical and historical writings on Philippine dance today

 

            CONSOLIDATION AND EXAMINATIONS  (2 WEEKS)

 

            Total No. of weeks:                                     16 weeks
