Brief Background: The first co-educational freshmen residence hall on campus, the Kalayaan Residence Hall opened its doors to its first group of residents in June 1975. Originally an H-type building, an annex was constructed during its third year of operation, and became operational in June 1978. Kalayaan Residence Hall is conveniently located at the corner blocks of Roces and Laurel Avenues and is adjacent to other upperclassmen dormitories namely: Yakal, Molave, Sanggumay and Ipil. It is only 10-15 minutes walk to the College of Social Science and Philosophy and is just a few meters away from the Catholic and Protestant chapels, the UP Health Service (Infirmary), the UP Shopping Center, and the UP Consumers' Cooperative Store. Transportation is very accessible since it is located along the main jeepney thoroughfare. Each room is designed for two students only and is provided with basic furnishings such as study table and chair, bed with mattress, lockers and mirrors. Bath and comfort rooms are common.

Dormitory activities are designed to complement the academic curriculum and to help the residents adjust to college life. Being in their formative years, the freshmen residents may not have outgrown the need for parental
care yet. Kalayaan Residence Hall is not just a place for food and shelter, but also a place where they are given the opportunity to learn to live with others, to build and test their own philosophy of living and above all, to react to personal and social situations as mature persons.

The hall operates on the single fee system. To carry out its program, the residence hall is staffed and maintained by people who have a rich background in student personnel work, particularly guidance and counseling. Each corridor is taken care of by a resident assistant who is either an upperclassman or a graduate student. Supervision of the maintenance of the building and its premises is done by the Hall Supervisor and other staff members. Daily cleaning of the building and its surroundings as well as its security needs are taken care of by private agencies.
