DIPLOMA in URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING


This program requires the completion of 26 units of course work - seven 3-unit subjects and one 5-unit subjects as follows:

  • Theory and Practice of Planning

  • Land Use Planning

  • Planning Process

  • Research Methods in Planning

  • Project Planning and Development

  • Planning Analysis and Techniques

  • Site Planning

  • Planning Workshop

These also constitute the core subjects for the M.A. program.

MASTER IN ARTS (M.A.) in URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING


There are two options in taking the M.A. program in Urban and Regional Planning: Plan A and Plan B.

  • Plan A (thesis option)

[Diploma-level subjects + one (1) 3 unit-subject* + thesis]

  • Plan B (non-thesis option)

[Diploma-level subjects + five (5)  3-unit subjects* + comprehensive examination)]

 

*Students may choose from the menu of subjects in the fields of Urban and Regional Planning, Housing, Transportation Planning, and Environmental Planning identified by the School.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D.) in URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING

The Ph.D. program is designed to equip the students with the knowledge and specialized skills appropriate for planning and planning-related positions in the academe, government and private sectors. The program requires completion of the course in Urban and Regional Planning at the M.A. level plus the following:

  • Graduate Seminar in Urban and Regional Planning Policies

  • Advanced Research Methods in Urban and Regional Planning

  • Six subjects (3 units each) from the menu of subjects in the fields of Urban and Regional Planning, Housing, Transportation Planning, and Environmental Planning

  • Comprehensive exam

  • Ph.D. Dissertation 12 units

MS REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLANNING

The Masters in Science in Regional Development Planning, or the SPRING Program, is a joint offering of SURP and the University of Dortmund in Germany, focusing on regional and district development planning, with emphasis on rural areas.

The two-year program runs for one year at the University of Dortmund and another year at the University of the Philippines.

The program in Dortmund consists of the following subjects:

  • Agriculture Development Planning

  • Ecology and Environment Planning

  • Financing and Budgeting

  • Regional Settlement Pattern

  • Organization and Management, Participation

  • Program Management and Project Planning

  • Regional Economic Development Planning

  • Social Infrastructure and Demography

  • Development Theories and strategies

  • Transport Planning

It further contains several workshops and seminars, including:

  • Carthography, Aerial Photography, Geographical Information Systems(GIS)

  • Computer Workshop

  • German Planning System

  • Group Facilitation Techniques and Conflict Resolution Strategies

  • Planning and Decision-Making Theory

  • Planning Workshop

  • Introduction to Scientific Research and Writing

  • SPRING Colloquium 

Program for Year Two at the School of Urban and Regional Planning include:

  • Research Methods in Planning

  • Regional Planning Analysis and Techniques

  • Special Problems in Regional Planning

  • Regional Planning Workshop

  • Master’s Thesis

  • Optional Subjects (from other UP Departments such as Public Administration, Community Development, Transportation Planning, etc)
