UP SURP-PLANADES team joins
ISSOWAMA meeting in Cambodia

May 5-6, 2010
--- A team from the UP School of Urban and Regional Planning
(SURP) - UP Planning and Development Research Foundation Inc.
(PLANADES) joined representatives of the patner organizations of
the European Commission (EC)-funded project entitled “Integrated
Sustainable Solid Waste Management in Asia (ISSOWAMA)
Coordination Action” at the mid-term meeting held at the City Angkor
Hotel in Siem Reap Province. The team, composed of Prof. Rosario
D. Jimenez; Dr. Mario R. Delos Reyes; and Ms. Kristine
C. Follosco-Aspiras, along with twenty-three (23) other partner
organizations convened to attend the meeting in Cambodia.

Chancellor Cao confers
degrees of 31 SURP graduates
April
25, 2010---UP
Diliman Chancellor Sergio S. Cao conferred the degrees and
titles of two PhD candidates, nine (9) masteral candidates, and
twenty (20) Diploma candidates for graduation during the SURP
Recognition and Commencement Program held at the Firmalino Room of
the UP SURP.

Urbanism study top ten in 2010 Shanghai EXPO
One of the research projects of the UP School of Urban and Regional
Planning spearheaded by its Director of Research, Dr. David
Leonides T. Yap, was selected by the
Bureau International des
Expositions (BIE) in Paris as one of the ten nominees for the
2010 Shanghai World Exposition on “Better City, Better Life”.

students get UN Habitat CC
research grants
April 23, 2010 ---
In an awarding ceremony,, SURP Dean Candido A. Cabrido Jr. and College Secretary, Dr.
Mario R. Delos Reyes formally recognized
five graduate students of the UP
School of Urban and Regional Planning
(UP SURP) who were selected by the
United Nations Human
Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT)
as grantees for their Climate Change-related research proposals. The
students will undertake their respective researches for six (6)
months with financial support from the
UN- HABITAT. The
implementation of the studies will in turn be monitored by the UP
SURP.

UPDiliman
partners with Korean university
April 15,
2010---The University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD)
and the Seoul National University of Technology (SeoulTech)
forged a Memorandum of Agreement for academic exchange and research
cooperation on April 15, 2010 in Seoul, Korea.
UPD Chancellor
Sergio S. Cao
and his counterpart SeoulTech President Jun-Hyong Rho signed
the Memorandum of Agreement which is deemed to promote academic
excellence and greater international cooperation between the two
universities.

UN-HABITAT host international climate change seminar-workshop
The UP
School of Urban and Regional Planning
(UP SURP) and the
United Nations Human Settlements
Programme (UN-HABITAT) hosted an
International University Seminar-Workshop with the theme “Strengthening
Climate Change in Planning Education” on March 1 to 5, 2010 at
the Calabia Mini-Theater, UP SURP, Diliman, Quezon City.
The seminar-workshop sought to mainstream
climate change into the existing syllabi of UP SURP and to
eventually provide Continuing Professional Education/Development (CPE/D)
for urban planners and practitioners at the local level,
particularly among local government units (LGUs) and at the regional
level, the Asia-Pacific, in particular.

School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) as a center for
learning and research in the development of innovative theories,
tools, and sustainable practices in urban, rural and regional
planning adapted to developing countries
Mission
The SURP’s
mission for the next three years (2007-2010) is to
further enhance its contribution to socioeconomic development
and nation-building by:
Improving the quality of education in the school and producing
highly competent planners.
Extending technical assistance to government, non-government
organizations (NGOs), peoples' organizations (POs), the private
sector, and other academic and research institutions on policy
formulation and plan preparation for the development of
localities, regions, and the nation.
Disseminating new knowledge on urban and regional planning
theories, tools, and practices through the school’s publications
and training programs.
Protecting and fighting for the welfare of society
-particularly
the poor- and promoting social justice and equity in the
formulation of development plans and programs.
Thrusts
Enrich
curriculum and establish areas of specialization;
Upgrade
teaching, training, and research facilities;
Enhance
competencies of faculty and staff on novel and advanced planning
methods and techniques;
Mobilize
resources to improve the school’s physical facilities, support
faculty and staff development, and expand scholarship programs;
Strengthen and widen linkages and networks with international
organizations and foreign universities for joint academic,
research, and training
programs, and exchange of faculty and publication programs;

enrolment of planners from poor municipalities in the
School's Diploma and training programs, through cross subsidies
