Candido A. Cabrido, Jr., has been chosen by the Professional
Regulation Commission (PRC) as the recipient of the 2011
Outstanding Professional of the Year Award in the field of

inaugurates new facilities

February 22, 2011---UP
Diliman officials graced the inauguration ceremony of the third
floor of SURP’s main building. Chancellor Sergios S. Cao and Vice
Chancellor for Academic Affairs
Lorna I. Paredes led the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The
refurbished sections of the SURP building will comprise of the GIS
laboratory, a faculty lounge, and a multi-purpose hall. The
University of the Philippines Alumni Association (UPAA) – SURP
Chapter provided for desks and chairs to equip the hall.

SURP and ASoG
tie up for CC program

The
UP School of Urban and Regional Planning (UP SURP) and the
Ateneo School of Government (ASoG) forged a
Memorandum
of Understanding (MOU) to enhance cooperation in education and
research activities. The MOU mainly involves the joint development,
promotion, and implementation of
academic programs
on climate
change adaptation and mitigation.
Last January 12, 2011, SURP Dean Candido A.
Cabrido, Jr. and ASoG Dean Antonio La Vina signed on behalf of their
institutions while SURP Executive Committee Members and
representatives from the ASoG Climate Change Program were present to
witness the MOU signing.

SURP
prof is SEARCA professorial chairholder
Dr. Crispin Emmanuel D. Diaz, Associate Professor at the
UP School of Urban and Regional Planning was awarded the
SEARCA Professorial Chair for School Year 2010/2011.
For this grant, Dr. Diaz is pursuing a research on “Exploring the
Funding and Management of the Construction and Maintenance of Rural
Roads through Public-Private Partnerships”. He is set to
deliver a lecture on the said study at
the SEARCA Agriculture and Development Seminar Series later in the
year.

SURP hosts Korean students
The University of the Philippines School of Urban and Regional
Planning (UP SURP) hosted Korean students from the Seoul
National University of Science and Technology (SeoulTech) who
conducted their International Workshop at UP Diliman from January
5-February 1, 2011.
Part of their workshop class requirements is the preparation of a
master plan for a municipality in South Korea. As a culmination of
their month-long workshop, students from the SeoulTech Department of
Architectural Design presented their work on “Master Plan for
Dobong Municipality by 2030” on January 29, 2011, Saturday,
10:00 am to 12:00 noon at the Firmalino Hall, UP SURP, Diliman ,
Quezon City.

New York City
planner talks on NYC development plan and zoning
January 21, 2011---Ms.
Melissa R. Cerezo, a Visiting Practitioner and a City Planner from the New York City
Department of City Planning, delivered lectures on the
“Strategic Development Plan of New York
City” and the
“Rezoning
Project in West Harlem, Upper Manhattan, NYC”
at the Firmalino Hall, UP SURP,
Diliman, Quezon City.
The
lectures kicked-off
UP SURP's
2011 Public Lecture Series, which is the School's venue for
discussing contemporary issues in planning education and practice.
Ms.
Cerezo also visited Antipolo City Government and the Province of
Tarlac, where she presented the same lectures to officials and
representatives of the provincial and local governments.

Korean
university visits UP Diliman

November 22, 2010 --- The Executive Committee of the School
of Urban and Regional Planning joined other UP Diliman officials in
a meeting led by UPD Chancellor Sergio S. Cao and Seoul
National University of Technology President Jun-hyong Rho.
Representatives from UPD and SeoulTech discussed possible academic
exchange as part of the Memorandum of Agreement between the two
universities.

Vision
The
School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) as a globally
competitive learning and research institution in the fields of
urban, rural, and regional planning within an archipelagic and
tropical environment comprised of landscapes
and seascapes in a developing economy
The
School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) as a center for
learning and research in the development of innovative theories,
tools, and sustainable practices in urban, rural and regional
planning adapted to developing countries
Mission
The SURP’s
mission for the next three years (2010-2013) shall be to
continue and further enhance its contribution to socioeconomic development
and nation-building by:
Improving the quality of education in the school and producing
highly competent planners.
Extending technical assistance to government, non-government
organizations (NGOs), peoples' organizations (POs), the private
sector, and other academic and research institutions on policy
formulation and plan preparation for the development of
localities, regions, and the nation.
Disseminating new knowledge on urban and regional planning
theories, tools, and practices through the school’s publications
and training programs.
Protecting and
advocating for the welfare of society
-particularly
the poor- and promoting social justice and equity in the
formulation of development plans and programs.
Thrusts
The thrusts of
the School for the next three years (2010-2013) shall be to:
Implement
the School's new curriculum with fields of specialization in
Estate Planning, Transportation Planning, Public Works Planning, and
Environment and Natural Resources Planning;
Increase
enrolment of planners from poorer (4th-6th income classes) municipalities in the
School's diploma and training programs, through cross subsidies
and scholarships;
Enhance
competencies of faculty and staff on novel and advanced planning
methods and techniques;
Activate
the School's planning journal and other publications;
Strengthen and
expand linkages and networks with international and local
organizations and foreign universities for joint academic,
research, and training
programs, and exchange of faculty and publication programs;
Upgrade
teaching, training, and research facilities;
Mobilize
resources to improve the School’s physical facilities, support
faculty and staff development, and expand scholarship programs;
and,
Lead in
the preparation of the Updated Land use Plan for the Diliman
Campus,
