UP SURP holds first grand alumni homecoming

October
24, 2008---The
School of Urban and Regional Planning held its very first Grand
Alumni Homecoming, dubbed “SURP: 43 @ 100”, at The
Grand Terrace in Commonwealth, Quezon City. SURP alumni, faculty,
staff, and guests convened for a nostalgic night of reminiscing,
recognition, and renewal of friendship and camaraderie.

celebrates 43rd foundation day
October 22,
2008---On
the occasion of the UP SURP’s 43rd founding anniversary,
the School’s faculty, staff, alumni, and friends gathered together
for a thanksgiving mass, the rededication of the Cesar O. Marquez
Room into the SURP GIS Laboratory, and the inauguration of the
Student Lounge and Alumni Office.

August 29, 2008---Dr. Darin C. Gunesekera,
a Sri Lankan social entrepreneur and Yale University graduate, delivered a Special Lecture
entitled "Bringing the Capital Market Home to the People"
at the
University of the Philippines School of Urban and Regional Planning
(UP SURP) in Diliman, Quezon City. |
The forum discussed the Sri Lankan
socialized housing model that situates the people in the property
and financial ladder and makes them stakeholders in urban
regeneration and social transformation. The forum also served as
a venue to discuss new trends and strategies in addressing the
housing problems in the Philippines.

Long-Term
Vision
The School
of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) to be a
globally competitive learning and research institution in the
fields of urban, rural, and regional planning within an
archipelagic and tropical environment comprising of landscapes
and seascapes in a developing economy
The School
of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) as a center for learning
and research in the development of innovative theories, tools,
and sustainable practices in urban, rural and regional planning
that are adapted to developing countries
Mission
SURP’s
mission for the next three years (2007-2010) is to continue to
further enhance its contribution to socioeconomic development
and nation-building by:
Improving the quality of education in the school and producing
highly competent planners.
Extending technical assistance to government, non-government
organizations (NGOs), peoples' organizations (POs), private
sector, and other academic and research institutions on policy
formulation and plan preparation for the development of
localities, regions, and the nation.
Disseminating new knowledge on urban and regional planning
theories, tools, and practices through the school’s publications
and training programs.
Protecting and fighting for the welfare of society particularly
the poor and promoting social justice and equity in the
formulation of development plans and programs.
Thrusts
Enrich
curriculum and establish of areas of specialization;
Upgrade
teaching, training, and research facilities;
Enhance
competencies of faculty and staff on novel and advanced planning
methods and techniques;
Mobilize
resources to improve the school’s physical facilities, support
faculty and staff development, and expand scholarship programs;
Strengthen and widen linkages and networks with international
organizations and foreign universities for joint academic
programs, exchange of faculty, research and training programs;
Increase
enrolment of planners from poor municipalities to the Diploma
course and training programs of the school through cross
subsidies and scholarships.
