UP SURP-PLANADES team joins
ISSOWAMA meeting in Cambodia

--- A team from the UP School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP)
- UP Planning and Development Research Foundation Inc. (PLANADES)
joined representatives of the patner organizations of the European
Commission (EC)-funded project entitled “Integrated Sustainable
Solid Waste Management in Asia (ISSOWAMA) Coordination Action” at
the mid-term meeting held at City Angkor Hotel in Siem Reap Province.
The team, composed of Prof. Rosario D. Jimenez; Dr. Mario R.
Delos Reyes; and Ms. Kristine C. Follosco-Aspiras, along
with twenty-three (23) other partner organizations convened to attend
the meeting in Cambodia.

This meeting served as the venue for updating the project’s status in
terms of activities carried out during the first year of
implementation, and for discussing the next steps to be undertaken.
Some of the major accomplishments of the project, so far, included:

Report on the Current Research in Solid Waste Management in
Asian
Developing Countries
2.
Characterization and Evaluation Criteria for Solid Waste
Management
Networks
3.
E-Tool: Database of Scientific Literature, Networks and
Stakeholders
4.
Adapted Dissemination Tools: Webpage establishment and
management, Project leaflets and posters
The partners are now in the process of mapping and evaluating solid
waste management case studies from Asian developing countries. Based
on the local case studies that will be selected, a review and analysis
of environmental impact assessment methods and impact categories will
be carried out. The final output will be the Asian Guidelines for ISWM
Assessment Tools.
UP SURP-PLANADES with the support of another Philippine partner the
Solid Waste Management Association of the Philippines (SWAPP) and
other institutions; Zero Kalat para sa Kaunlaran (ZKK) and the IPM
Construction and Development Corporation, is set to host the first of
the three (3) panel discussions on “Relevant Potential Impacts of
Solid Waste Management in Asian Developing Countries” to be held in
Metro Manila in November 2010. Likewise, SWAPP with support from ZKK
Foundation, Inc. and IPM, will organize one (1) of the eight (8)
regional workshops on “Adapted Waste Treatment Technologies and
Services” in January 2011.
