Faculty and Alumni Bags DOST-NAST 2007 Most Outstanding Scientific
Paper Award
The
paper entitled "Logit Choice Models and Utility Ranking of
Transport Modes in Metro Manila with Urban Transport Policy Applications,"
co-authored by Dr. Alexis M. Fillone (SURP PhD 2006), Dr.
Cresencio M. Montalbo, Jr. (Associate Professor, UP-SURP) and Dr.
Noriel Christopher C. Tiglao (Assistant Professor, UP-NCPAG) has
been awarded the 2007 Outstanding Scientific Paper Award by the
National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) of the Department
of Science and Technology (DOST). The award was given during the
DOST-NAST annual convention held at the Manila Hotel last July 12,
2007. Recently, the
same paper also garnered the Commission on Higher Education's Republica
Award (NCR Level) for academic excellence.
The multi-award winning paper is based on the doctoral dissertation
of Dr. Fillone which he wrote with Dr. Montalbo as his thesis adviser
and Dr. Tiglao as co-adviser. Dr. Fillone is currently a faculty
member of the Civil Engineering Department of De La Salle University,
Manila.

Dr.
Bejamin V. Cariño
Lectures on Urban Planning at Silliman University
The
Silliman University in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental launched
its Integrative Lecture Series last July 27, 2007 at the Silliman
University Auditorium. The launching speakers for the event were
Dr. Ledivina V. Cariño (Ret. University Professor, UP-NCPAG)
who lectured on volunteerism, and Dr. Benjamin V. Cariño
(Professor and former Dean, UP-SURP) whose lecture entitled "Urban
Planning: Basic Concepts and Considerations" talks about
the status of urban planning in the Philippines.
Both lecturers were later conferred as Adjunct Professors by the
University. Present during the integrative lecture and conferment
were Silliman University President, Dr. Ben S. Manayang and Prof.
Leonor M. Briones, Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Faculty Joins Curriculum Development Workshop in IHS, Netherlands
Dr.
Mario R. delos Reyes (Associate Professor, UP-SURP) arrived from
a 1-week curriculum development workshop held last July 16-20, 2007
at the Institute for Housing and Urban Studies (IHS), Erasmus University
in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The workshop is part of the preparation
for a series of training programs on Sustainable Cities/Environmental
Planning and Management to be piloted at the Asia-Pacific Region
and funded by UN-HABITAT. The training program is intended for planning
professionals and practitioners, and for those in the academe.
Dr. delos Reyes, who represented the University of the Philippines
in the workshop, is joined by faculty members of the IHS and representatives
from Urban Solutions, a firm based in Netherlands with its Asia-Pacific
Office located at Hanoi, Vietnam.

Dr. Candido
A. Cabrido, Jr. is the New Dean of SURP

Dr.
Candido A. Cabrido, Jr. taking his oath as Dean of SURP at the office
of UP Diliman Chancellor Sergio S. Cao.
The
Deanship of the School of Urban and Regional Planning was formally
turned over to Dr. Candido A. Cabrido, Jr. in a simple
ceremony held at the SURP Lecture Hall last June 7, 2007. The turnover
ceremony was attended by SURP Faculty and Staff, and invited guests.
Among those who graced the occasion are: former deans Dr. Leandro
A. Villoria, Dr. Benjamin V. Cariño, Prof. Dolores A. Endriga,
and Dr. Primitivo C. Cal; and retired SURP faculty members, Prof.
Cynthia Turingan and Prof. Lita Velmonte.
Also
introduced in the turnover ceremony are the School's new set of officials.
They are: Prof. Rosario D. Jimenez, College Secretary; Dr. Marideth
R. Bravo, Director of Graduate Studies; Prof. Ernesto M. Serote,
Director of Training and Extension Services; and Dr. Rachel H. Racelis,
Director for Research and Publications.
The
term of Dr. Cabrido as Dean officially started on May 2, 2007. He
will be serving for a term of three years up to April 30, 2010.

Faculty, Graduates, and Students Top May 2007 Environmental
Planner Board Examinations
The
University of the Philippines School of Urban and Regional Planning
(UP SURP), the country’s foremost graduate academic institution
in the field of urban and regional planning, is proud to announce
that one (1) faculty member and ten (10) of its graduates and students
passed this year’s Environmental Planner Licensure Examination given
by the Board of Environmental Planning in Manila last May 29 to
31, 2007.Seven (7) of the top ten examinees were from UP-SURP.
