With the main theme "Rationalizing Local Planning System in the Philippines", the SCURP 2008 aims to introduce a model for local environmental planning and development that will integrate planning in the overall governance function. Through this special course, UP-SURP hopes to contribute to the national effort to localize the principles of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS

The UP SURP Research and Publications Unit kicked off its project entitled: LGU Networking for Sustainable Land Use Planning and Development: A Pilot Study for Selected Cities and Municipalities of Bulacan through an initial meeting with Bulcan Provincial and Planning Coordinator Arlene G. Pascual on December 2, 2008.

Sponsored by the then Senator Ramon B. Magsaysay Jr., thru the Department of Science and Technology, the project runs from November 2008 to July 2009.

It aims to develop a virtual information network on urban, regional, rural and environmental planning concerns which will serve as a feedback mechanism among the academe, local government units (LGU), national government agencies (NGA), various non-government organizations (NGO), and peoples’ organizations (PO). The feedback mechanism will then serve as an avenue whereby planning models and procedures can be formulated to better address actual occurrences in a planning area.

The Research and Publications Unit formalized the guidelines for the UP SURP Working Paper Series. The working papers aim to provide the public with a venue to disseminate spatial-related studies to a wider audience and to generate academic and public discussions on various planning topics in the Philippine setting.
