SURP to hold conference on new curriculum

Faculty members of the School of Urban and Regional Planning are set to discuss and prepare the implementation plan of the Approved Curricular Revisions of the School in a Faculty Conference to be held on July 6-7, 2009 at the Fontana Leisure Parks, Clarkfield, Pampanga.

 

The Conference will also be a venue to review and harmonize the contents of the core and field of specialization courses, cluster faculty members by specialization, and propose modifications to policies relevant to the approved curricular revisions through presentations and workshops.

RP government reaffirms commitment to provide decent housing to informal settlers

MANILA, Dec. 25 — The Philippine government is committed to provide decent housing to informal settlers nationwide, the country’s lead development agency declared.

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), in a report presented shortly following the launch of “The Search for The Millennium Development Goal (MDG) Youth Champions” at the Manila Hotel, said that the government has adopted a two-pronged strategy to address the housing problem that plague urban and some rural areas in the country.

Solon seeks housing plan for poor

MANILA, Philippines -- Metro Manila's urban dwellers living along esteros, dump sites, and other dangerous areas will soon enjoy decent living conditions under a multibillion-peso measure proposed at the House of Representatives.

The substitute bill has been endorsed by Speaker Prospero Nograles for plenary approval when sessions resume on January 20.

Incorporate DRR measures into local development plans, RDCC tells LGUs

TUBOD, Lanao del Norte,  - All local government units (LGUs) in Northern Mindanao have been enjoined to integrate disaster risk reduction (DRR) measures into their respective local development plans (LDP).

This is the context of Resolution No. 01-2008 of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC), Region 10, said P/Chief Supt. Teodorico B. Capuyan, Regional Director of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Chairperson of RDCC in the region.

Albay's 'good practices' vs disasters to be replicated in 3 provinces

LEGAZPI CITY, Sept. 30 — Disaster-prone Albay is helping other provinces learn also from her sad experience.

Recently, Albay's good practices in disaster risk reduction, mitigation and control were cited by the Oxfam of Great Britain and targeted for replication in the provinces of Sarangani, Sorsogon and Pampanga.

Disaster risk reduction program launched in Pampanga

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Sept. 25 – With the coordination of the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) and Provincial Disaster Response Network (PDRN), the provincial government and other stakeholders in provincial disaster management launched a disaster risk reduction program for local communities here, Wednesday. The launching of the "Provincial Readiness to Institutionalize and Mainstream Risk Reduction" (PRIMRR) project was a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the provincial government and international charity group Oxfam.

Guimaras LGUs identify typhoon as their top disaster

ILOILO CITY, Oct. 29 — The five municipalities in the island-province of Guimaras have identified typhoons as the topmost disaster they have to deal with followed by flooding.

In last week's disaster management training, the municipalities of Jordan, Buenavista, Nueva Valencia, San Lorenzo and Sibunag named the top ten disasters each town must give emphasis.

SURP Professor named "Planner of the Year"

June 19, 2009---Former SURP professor and Director of Training, Prof. Ernesto M. Serote was chosen by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) as the recipient of the 2009 Outstanding Professional of the Year Award in the field of Environmental Planning.

 

Prof. Serote was cited for his high degree of competence and integrity in the exercise of

the planning profession, which recognized him as the “Guru of Philippine Local Planning”.

2009 EnP Licensure Exam Results

Students and alumni of the University of the Philippines School of Urban and Regional Planning (UP SURP) once again topped the Environmental Planner Licensure Examination.

In the top five spots are: Enrico Franco L. Vistan (1st place); Mariño S. Deocariza (2nd place); Mary Jean A. Caleda (3rd place); Guinivere L. Lucero (4th place); Camellia Maureen M. Cammayo (5th place).

The topnotchers and fourteen (14) other successful examinees from the School are among the thirty four (34) examinees who passed the board exam which was given on June 16-17, 2009.

Retirement Party

May 8, 2009---The UP School of Urban and Regional Planning hosted a special program and dinner in honor of its three retiring faculty members; namely, Dr. Primitivo C. Cal; Prof. Rosario D. Jimenez; and Prof. Ernesto M. Serote. In his remarks, Dean Candido A. Cabrido, Jr. expressed feeling sadness over the retirement of three of the School’s most experienced faculty members, on the one hand, and hope, on the other, that the three will continue assisting the School, particularly in implementing the new SURP Curriculum and in projects of the School’s foundation, the UP Planning and Development Research Foundation, Inc. (UP PLANADES).

Ma'am Leddy

The UP community, including the SURP family and UP PLANADES paid tribute to the late Dr. Ledivina V. Cariño in necrological services held at the UP Church of Risen Lord and funeral rites at the Ellinwood Church in Malate.

 

Sir Ben and Ma'am Leddy join the UP Centennial Kick-off celebration in January 2008.

Wife of  Dr. Benjamin V. Cariño, former dean of SURP and current Executive Director of UP PLANADES, Ma'am Leddy also served the University in various capacities as University Professor, Dean of what was then known as the College of Public Administration (now UP NCPAG), Vice-President for Public Affairs, and founding System Director of the UP Pahinungod Volunteer

Program, among others. She was also a prolific writer and researcher in the fields of national development and corruption, and continued her 45-year service to the University as University Professor Emeritus.

 

Dr. Leddy Cariño passed away on June 12, 2009 but those she left behind will “take comfort in the knowledge that the lives of those she served have forever been enhanced by her unstinting faith and untiring dedication”.


SURP graduates 44 students

April 26, 2008---The School of Urban and Regional Planning recognized the forty-four graduating students in a ceremony held at the UP SURP Firmalino Room, just before the 98th University Commencement Exercises.

 

The 44 SURP students were later conferred with their respective diplomas and degrees during the University Commencement Exercises. The School looks forward to the successful education of even more planning students in the next 100 years, in keeping with its vision to be a competitive learning and research institution in the development of innovative theories, tools, and sustainable practices in the fields of urban, rural, and regional planning.
