SCURP 2009: Call for Applications

The UP SURP Training Unit announces
a call for application for its
regular training course on planning
for the current year. With the main
theme "Rationalizing Local
Planning System in the
Philippines",
the Special Course on Urban and
Regional Planning or SCURP 2009 aims
to introduce a model for local
environmental planning and
development that will integrate
planning in the overall governance
function. Through this special
course, UP SURP hopes to contribute
to the national effort to localize
the principles of the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs). Dubbed as
Special Course on Urban and Regional
Planning (SCURP) 2009, the course
will run for ten Saturdays from
June 27 until August 29, 2009.

RP
government reaffirms commitment to provide
decent housing to informal settlers
MANILA, Dec. 25 — The
Philippine government is committed to
provide decent housing to informal settlers
nationwide, the country’s lead development
agency declared.
The National Economic and
Development Authority (NEDA), in a report
presented shortly following the launch of
“The Search for The Millennium Development
Goal (MDG) Youth Champions” at the Manila
Hotel, said that the government has adopted
a two-pronged strategy to address the
housing problem that plague urban and some
rural areas in the country.

Solon seeks
housing plan for poor
MANILA, Philippines -- Metro
Manila's urban dwellers living along esteros,
dump sites, and other dangerous areas will
soon enjoy decent living conditions under a
multibillion-peso measure proposed at the
House of Representatives.
The substitute bill has been
endorsed by Speaker Prospero Nograles for
plenary approval when sessions resume on
January 20.

TUBOD, Lanao del Norte,
- All local government units (LGUs) in
Northern Mindanao have been enjoined to
integrate disaster risk reduction (DRR)
measures into their respective local
development plans (LDP).
This is the context of
Resolution No. 01-2008 of the Regional
Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC), Region
10, said P/Chief Supt. Teodorico B. Capuyan,
Regional Director of the Philippine National
Police (PNP) and Chairperson of RDCC in the
region.

Albay's 'good
practices' vs disasters to be replicated in
3 provinces
LEGAZPI CITY, Sept. 30 — Disaster-prone
Albay is helping other provinces learn also
from her sad experience.
Recently, Albay's good practices in disaster
risk reduction, mitigation and control were
cited by the Oxfam of Great Britain and
targeted for replication in the provinces of
Sarangani, Sorsogon and Pampanga.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO,
Pampanga, Sept. 25 – With the coordination
of the Provincial Disaster Coordinating
Council (PDCC) and Provincial Disaster
Response Network (PDRN), the provincial
government and other stakeholders in
provincial disaster management launched a
disaster risk reduction program for local
communities here, Wednesday. The launching
of the "Provincial Readiness to
Institutionalize and Mainstream Risk
Reduction" (PRIMRR) project was a Memorandum
of Understanding (MOU) between the
provincial government and international
charity group Oxfam.

ILOILO
CITY, Oct. 29 — The five municipalities in
the island-province of Guimaras have
identified typhoons as the topmost disaster
they have to deal with followed by flooding.
In last week's disaster
management training, the municipalities of
Jordan, Buenavista, Nueva Valencia, San
Lorenzo and Sibunag named the top ten
disasters each town must give emphasis.

4 Bulacan LGUs to join DOST-SURP
project
The province of Bulacan, the municipalities of Balagtas, Santa
Maria, and Marilao, and the city of Malolos will participate as
pilot areas in the DOST-SURP project “LGU Networking for Sustainable
Land Use Planning and Development”.
Funds for the research were taken
from a P500,000 grant from the
Congressional Initiative Allocation
of former Senator Ramon Magsaysay,
Jr. The grant was also used to
purchase much-needed computers and
other equipment for the SURP.

On
March 2, 2009, representatives from the local planning and development
offices of the local governments met with UP SURP Research and
Publications representatives, headed by Dr. David Leonides T. Yap,
to discuss said project, which is implemented by the SURP Research and
Publications Division
in partnership
with the Philippine Council for Industry and Energy Research and
Development (PCIERD) – Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
