SURP to hold Special Planning Lecture

The School of Urban and Regional Planning will host a Special Lecture entitled "An Innovative Regional Governance Model in the Philippines and Its Role in Enhancing Urban-Rural Linkages: The Case of Metro Iloilo-Guimaras", as part of the SURP's 44th Anniversary celebration on October 22, 2009 at the Firmalino Hall at 2:00 p.m. The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Zenaida A. Manalo, SURP professor who has recently finished her Visiting

Professorship at the International Spatial Planning Center at the Technical University of Dortmund in Germany.

 

SURP hosts lecture on the Coral Triangle Initiative

September 23, 2009---The UP School of Urban and Regional Planning, in cooperation with the American Embassy in Manila, held a Special Lecture entitled Impacts of Terrestrial and Urban Development on the Marine Resources. Dr. Kent Carpenter, a professor of Biological Sciences from the University of Hawaii presented the local threats Coral Triangle Initiative and   which, Dr. Carpenter said can be addressed by urban and land use planning.

RP government reaffirms commitment to provide decent housing to informal settlers

MANILA, Dec. 25 — The Philippine government is committed to provide decent housing to informal settlers nationwide, the country’s lead development agency declared.

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), in a report presented shortly following the launch of “The Search for The Millennium Development Goal (MDG) Youth Champions” at the Manila Hotel, said that the government has adopted a two-pronged strategy to address the housing problem that plague urban and some rural areas in the country.

Solon seeks housing plan for poor

MANILA, Philippines -- Metro Manila's urban dwellers living along esteros, dump sites, and other dangerous areas will soon enjoy decent living conditions under a multibillion-peso measure proposed at the House of Representatives.

The substitute bill has been endorsed by Speaker Prospero Nograles for plenary approval when sessions resume on January 20.

Incorporate DRR measures into local development plans, RDCC tells LGUs

TUBOD, Lanao del Norte,  - All local government units (LGUs) in Northern Mindanao have been enjoined to integrate disaster risk reduction (DRR) measures into their respective local development plans (LDP).

This is the context of Resolution No. 01-2008 of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC), Region 10, said P/Chief Supt. Teodorico B. Capuyan, Regional Director of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Chairperson of RDCC in the region.

Albay's 'good practices' vs disasters to be replicated in 3 provinces

LEGAZPI CITY, Sept. 30 — Disaster-prone Albay is helping other provinces learn also from her sad experience.

Recently, Albay's good practices in disaster risk reduction, mitigation and control were cited by the Oxfam of Great Britain and targeted for replication in the provinces of Sarangani, Sorsogon and Pampanga.

Disaster risk reduction program launched in Pampanga

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Sept. 25 – With the coordination of the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) and Provincial Disaster Response Network (PDRN), the provincial government and other stakeholders in provincial disaster management launched a disaster risk reduction program for local communities here, Wednesday. The launching of the "Provincial Readiness to Institutionalize and Mainstream Risk Reduction" (PRIMRR) project was a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the provincial government and international charity group Oxfam.

Guimaras LGUs identify typhoon as their top disaster

ILOILO CITY, Oct. 29 — The five municipalities in the island-province of Guimaras have identified typhoons as the topmost disaster they have to deal with followed by flooding.

In last week's disaster management training, the municipalities of Jordan, Buenavista, Nueva Valencia, San Lorenzo and Sibunag named the top ten disasters each town must give emphasis.

UP PLANADES and LAMP2 sign MOU

September 8, 2009---Representatives from the University of the Philippines Planning and Development Research Foundation, Inc. (UP PLANADES) and the Land Administration Management Program-Phase II (LAMP2) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the joint conduct of the Land Administration Education Program.

 

The MOU is part of the LAMP carried out by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Australian Agency for International Development  the Embassy that aims to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of land administration and management in the Philippines.

Taiwanese university explores possible linkage with UP SURP

 

September 7, 2009 --- Dean Candido A. Cabrido Jr. and the rest of the SURP officials met with representatives from the National Cheng Kung University of Taiwan (NCKU) and discussed possible areas of linkages. Collaborations between the SURP and NCKU in the areas of scholarships offered by NCKU for masters and doctoral students, faculty exchanges, and joint researches on mutual areas of interest will be explored.

Ma'am Leddy

Thirty-four (34) new environmental planners (EnPs) took their oath of profession during a ceremony held at the Club Filipino, Greenhills, San Juan City. Of the 34 new EnPs, _____ are from the University of the Philippines School of Urban and Regional Planning (UP SURP). The first placer and the 2009 PRC Outstanding  The new EnPs passed the 2008 Environmental Planner Licensure Examination which was given by the Board of Environmental Planning of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) in Manila on June 16-17, 2009.

 

 

 

 


Retirement Party

May 8, 2009---The UP School of Urban and Regional Planning hosted a special program and dinner in honor of its three retiring faculty members; namely, Dr. Primitivo C. Cal; Prof. Rosario D. Jimenez; and Prof. Ernesto M. Serote. In his remarks, Dean Candido A. Cabrido, Jr. expressed feeling sadness over the retirement of three of the School’s most experienced faculty members, on the one hand, and hope, on the other, that the three will continue assisting the School, particularly in implementing the new SURP Curriculum and in projects of the School’s foundation, the UP Planning and Development Research Foundation, Inc. (UP PLANADES).
