SURP officers and
representatives from the Vancouver Island University, Canada (L-R)
Ms. Jean Dickinson, Dr. Marideth R. Bravo, Mr. Jim Dickinson, Prof.
Ernesto M. Serote, Ms. Jocelyn A. Yuzon, Ms. Pamela Shaw, Dean
Candido A. Cabrido, Jr., Dr. David T. Yap, and Mr. James Shaw.
May 13, 2008
--- The Dean and officers of the U.P. School of Urban and Regional
Planning welcomed guests from
Vancouver Island University to discuss the possibility of
establishing academic and institutional linkages between the two
schools. Vancouver Island University, formerly Malaspina
University-College, in Canada offers planning courses in its
undergraduate program and is particularly interested in natural
resources-based planning and development. The two universities
intend to explore and eventually pursue tie-up activities in the
areas of faculty exchange and joint researches and academic
programs.
Currently, the
School has a continuing partnership with the
University of Dortmund in Germany through the
Spatial Planning for Regions in Growing Economies or SPRING, a
graduate program in regional and district development planning and
management. International linkages with other universities such as the
Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University in
Australia, Institute for Housing and Settlements in the Netherlands,
and
Diponegoro University in Indonesia are also being established.
These activities are in keeping with the School’s thrusts in the U.P.
centennial year to strengthen and widen linkages with foreign
universities for faculty exchange, and joint academic, research and
training programs.
The meeting was
facilitated by Senator Edgardo Angara, who is also the Chair of the
University of the Philippines Centennial Commission. Sen. Angara
was represented by Ms. Jocelyn A. Yuzon during the meeting.
