BACKGROUND
From 1969 to 1999,
the University of the Philippines School of Urban and Regional
Planning (UP SURP) published the Philippine
Planning Journal (PPJ), which was the only semi-annual journal on
Philippine planning at that time. The PPJ showcased articles related
to urban, regional, environmental, transport, and land use planning in
the Philippine context. Contributors included both faculty and
practitioners in the various fields of urban and regional planning and
other related disciplines.
In this year of the
UP Centennial, the UP SURP is formalizing a
working
paper series that aims to provide the public with a
venue to disseminate spatial-related studies to a wider audience and
to form basis of discourses on various planning topics. The UP SURP
working papers will also serve as a venue to develop journal materials
in relation to the School’s plan of publishing the Journal of Urban
and Regional Planning (JURP).
The working paper
series will promote the study of planning by setting up a repository
of knowledge and information on spatial-related urban, rural,
regional, and environmental planning. This is also in line with the
SURP’s vision and mission in the UP Centennial to foster the
development and dissemination of innovative theories, tools,
knowledge, and sustainable practices in urban, rural, regional, and
environmental planning through its publications.
OBJECTIVES
The UP SURP Working
Paper Series aims:
1.
To set up a repository of papers that
represent work-in-progress on topics with spatial dimension on urban,
rural, regional, and environmental planning related to the
Philippines;
2.
To provide a venue for
people interested in
planning to exchange views, concerns, and ideas on planning-related
issues;
3.
To generate academic and public discussions
on various planning-related issues;
4.
To increase peoples’ awareness of issues
relevant to sustainable development and environmental planning; and,
5.
To develop papers and articles on planning and related
issues
that can eventually qualify
for publication in journals.
