JANUARY

Launching of the 1998 Celebrations
The launching of the year-long centennial celebrations of the University as well as the 90th year of UP foundation will be held in and led by UP Manila, the first home of the University.

FEBRUARY

The Literature of the Revolution
The theme takes cognizance of the power of the press since it was during this month that the La Solidaridad, the mouthpiece of the Propaganda Movement, was founded. Focus of the celebration is the press and its practitioners. Lead autonomous unit is UP Diliman, which is celebrating its traditional Diliman Week.

MARCH

Women of the Revolution
March is Women’s month. The theme recognizes the role played by women in the making of the nation. The University Center for Women’s Studies takes the active role in leading the festivities.

APRIL

Freedom Trail: The Philippine revolution in the Southern Tagalog
This month refreshes our memory of the theater of action during the first phase of the Revolution. The historical places of Laguna, Cavite, Batangas and Quezon shall be revisited through an educational tour. Taking charge during this month is UP Los Banos, Laguna being one of the historical provinces in the Filipino freedom trail.

MAY

Laboring To Make A Nation
May is the month of the traditional celebration of Labor Day. UP Diliman, particularly the School of Labor and Industrial Relation, takes the lead in this month’s celebration. The faculty as intellectual resource also contributes its mental labor to the building of the nation. The 1998 UP Faculty conference will be held on this month, with nationalism as the main conference theme.

JUNE

The Celebrations
This month is the big month celebrating the centennial of the declaration of Philippine Independence, and the foundation day of the University of the Philippines. The International Conference on the Treaty of Paris and the Grand Alumni Homecoming of the UP.

JULY

Founding Fathers of the Nation
This month coincides with the founding of the La Liga Filipina by Jose Rizal; the founding of the Katipunan by Andres Bonifacio and the birth anniversary of Apolinario Mabini. But long before the Philippine Revolution, the datus could also be considered as earlier founding fathers are of our nation. The focus on the kadatuan shall enable the other indigenous groups to participate in the national celebration as the scope of the celebration is widened to cover the idea of freedom. UP Mindanao leads the celebration for this month, with the Second Kadatuan Congress as the main feature.

AUGUST

The Philippine Revolution in the Manila Area This month celebrates the start of the Philippine Revolution with the Cry of Pugad Lawin. The UP System joins hands with the local governments of Quezon City, Manila, Marikina and Caloocan in the celebration.

SEPTEMBER

The Philippine Revolution in Central Luzon
The theme is inspired by the convening of the Malolos Congress during this particular month in 1898. UP Diliman particularly the College of Law joins hands with the provincial government of Bulacan to take the lead in this celebration, with the re-enactment of the Malolos Congress in Malolos.

OCTOBER

The Philippine Revolution in the Visayas
This month refreshes our memory of the second phase of the Philippine Revolution – the Philippine-American War. The main events to be commemorated are the Battle of balangiga in Samar; the inauguration of the Revolutionary Government in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo, and from an earlier period, the triumph of Lapu-Lapu over Magellan in Mactan, Cebu. These celebrations, hosted by the UP Visayas, is a moving celebration with the different UPV campuses participating: Tacloban, Iloilo and Cebu.

NOVEMBER

The Philippine Revolution: Catalyst of Revolution in Asia
The theme for this month celebrates the international significance of the Philippine Revolution, the first in Asia. UP Open University hosts this month’s celebrations.

DECEMBER

Patriotism
The theme is inspired by the birth anniversary of Graciano Lopez Jaena, first editor of La Solidaridad and the anniversary of Jose Rizal’s martyrdom. The month caps the year-long celebration with the traditional U.P. Lantern Parade to be held at Rizal Park and the maiden presentation of a commissioned musical work celebrating the Centennial of the Republic, the 90th anniversary of UP and UP Decade 1999-2008.
