(May 16)—The National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (NISMED) officially changed hands when its new director, Dr. Soledad C. Ulep, was sworn in by UPD Chancellor Caesar A. Saloma at the Office of the Chancellor in Quezon Hall last May 3. She takes over from Dr. Merle C. Tan, who held the position from 2002–2009.
Ulep has served the University for 32 years, getting her start as a research assistant and has chaired the elementary and high school mathematics groups, and has served as deputy director for research and extension and for administration.
She earned her doctoral degree from the University of Texas-Austin, US as a Fulbright-Hays scholar. She finished her MS in Mathematics from UPD and graduated magna cum laude in BS in Mathematics for Teachers from the Philippine Normal University-Manila both as a Department of Science and Technology scholar. In 2009, she was awarded the UPD Gawad Chanselor sa Natatanging REPS (Extension Category).—AKR
