Petronilo “Pete” Castañeda, retired professor of Department of Visual Communication of the College of Fine Arts died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on March 23. He was 74.
Born on 19 February 1939 in San Miguel, Pangasinan, Castañeda obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1959.
He taught at the University for 20 years, starting as Senior Lecturer in 1984 until his retirement as Associate Professor V in 2004. He served as Chairperson of the Department of Visual Communication from 1988 to 1990. Castañeda was a recipient of the Fernando Amorsolo Professorial Chair and the Jose Joya Professorial Chair in 1991 and 1998, respectively.
Known for his mastery of watercolor as a medium, Castaneda was one of the guest exhibitors in the prestigious Annual Exhibition of the Asian Watercolor Confederation held in Singapore in 1997.
He was one of the founding members of grUPo, an organization of UP Fine Arts graduates in the advertising industry who came together to paint.
He is survived by his wife Teresita, and his children Martin, Raphael, Salvador, and Patricia. —ACG
