NIGS professor honored


Lagmay wins PCASTRD prize for outstanding R&D.

The University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) reaffirmed its place as a leading producer of outstanding research and researchers with the recognition of National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) professor Dr. Alfredo Mahar Francisco A. Lagmay’s research by the Philippine Council for Advanced Science and Technology Research and Development (PCASTRD) last December.

Lagmay’s work, entitled The Effects of Basement Structure and Stratigraphic Heritages on Volcano Behavior, was the Overall Winner and 2008 Outstanding R&D in Advanced S&T in the 2008 PCASTRD Search for Outstanding R&D in Advanced Science and Technology.

His research delves into volcano behavior and can provide “…better understanding of a global data on landslide phenomena and occurrence of earthquakes in volcanic terrain,” a project that can go a long way in creating preventive measures before disaster strikes.

Lagmay received the award during the awarding ceremonies in the afternoon of December 18, 2008 at the Heritage Hotel in Pasay City. It came with a P400,000 cash prize that includes the P150,000 cash prize as the Sectoral Winner under Space Technology Applications
