New Book on Philippine Urban and Regional Development

The Colonial Iron Horse: Railroads and Regional Development in the Philippines, 1875-1935 by Arturo G. Corpuz is now off the press. Published by the University of the Philippines Press, the book identifies and discusses urban and regional development factors in late 19th to early 20th century Philippines by looking at transportation in general and railroads in particular.

The book tells stories of how railroads were planned, built, and operated; how they influenced and in turn were affected by the growth of urban centers and regions; and how various technological improvements, cultural and economic practices, and political events-from the introduction of automobiles to political conflicts in other parts of the world-figured in these developments. It discusses the strategic role of the railroad during the Philippine-American War, and the varying relationships and military bases and the production and distribution of key agricultural products. These topics provide glimpses of an era when railroads were active agents of change, describing where and why railroads were built and how these were involved in stamping out in shifting relief the social and economic geography of Luzon.          Arturo G. Corpuz has a B.A. (Architecture) from the University of the Philippines, and an M.R.P. (Regional Planning) and a Ph.D. (Urban and Regional Planning) from Cornell University. He is a Professorial Lecturer in the School of Urban and Regional Planning, University of the Philippines, and has been involved in the study and practice of urban and regional planning in both the public and private sectors.

The book is one of the more than 25 titles that the UP Press will launch on September 15, Wednesday, 4:30 p.m., at the Philippine Book Fair at SM Megamall.

UP Press Releases New Edith Tiempo Book

The UP Press has just released An Edith Tiempo Reader, a compact and portable collection of works which provide a cross sectional survey of the literary canon of one of the most distinguished writers of Philippine Literature.

Edith Tiempo's writing career spans over sixty years. Her range of genres extends from poetry to fiction, both long and short, to criticism. Six of her poems are featured in Six Filipino Poets (1954), edited by Leonard Casper. Her first collection of poems, The Tracks of Babylon and Other Poems, was published in 1966 by Swallow Press in Denver and won the Palanca first prize in 1967. She has published two other books of poems, a short story collection, and four novels, including His Native Coast, which won first prize in 1979 from the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Writers who have attended the Silliman National Writers Workshop, know her simply as "mom." She and her equally eminent husband, the late Dr. Edilberto K. Tiempo, co-founded the workshop in 1962 and have guided and inspired many writers. She holds an M.A. in Creative Writing from the State University of Iowa, and a Ph.D. from the University of Denver. In 1988, she received the Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas.

The editorial work for this landmark volume was shared by five eminent writers: Gémino H. Abad, Isagani R. Cruz, Cristina Pantoja-Hidalgo, Alfred Yuson, and Edna Zapanta Manlapaz. Final editing was done by Edith Tiempo herself, thus providing authoritative versions of these selections.

The UP Press will launch the book, together with more than 25 titles, on September 15, Wednesday, 4:30 p.m., at the Philippine Bookfair at SM Megamall.
